Bernie was a criminal in Ava Drake's employ. He and Jack helped the Eleven in his plan to steal the Arch.
Bernie and Jack attempted to steal the Arch from the Under Gallery using teleport limpets before the Eleven realised that it was a hard-light facsimile. After entering J. M. W. Turner's painting of Hampton Court Palace with Jacqui McGee as a hostage, Bernie and Jack fell into a bottomless pit. (AUDIO: The Curator's Gambit)
