The period between World War I and World War II, from 1918 to 1939, was one of upheaval and change in Britain. The coal, textile and ship-building industries were already in decline, and steam power was being replaced by electricity.
Having worked on the land and in factories during the First World War, women began to take a more prominent role in society and were finally given the vote in England.
