Case, possibly born as Karina, was a Berserker class cyborg Human-Dalek hybrid and companion of the War Doctor during the Last Great Time War. She was referred to as a "degradation" by other Daleks and faced a constant struggle with her dual identity as both Human and Dalek.

Biography[[edit] | [edit source]]

Early life[[edit] | [edit source]]

Karina was born on Carto Barloss to a couple called Borudan and Vaia. (AUDIO: Memnos [+]Loading...["Memnos (audio story)"]) She had a freckle under her left armpit, which her younger brother believed looked like a squashed spider. When she was a child, she visited a funfair with her mother. (AUDIO: The Hybrid's Choice [+]Loading...["The Hybrid's Choice (audio story)"])

Karina was 23 years old when the Daleks invaded. (AUDIO: Memnos [+]Loading...["Memnos (audio story)"]) During the invasion, the Daleks took her onto one of their Harvester ships, where she was partially converted into a Berserker class cyborg, however the conversation failed as her free will and compassion was too strong for the Dalek conditioning to overwhelm. She was dubbed "Negative Case-412289". (AUDIO: Saviour [+]Loading...["Saviour (audio story)"])

Meeting the Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

She is discovered on the Dalek Harvester by the War Doctor, Veklin and Albert Brown, who unhook her from the machinery and take her into their Battle TARDIS. The Doctor decides to give her the name "Case", which she accepts for lack of a better name. They answer a distress call from The Narwhal, which they discover is a trap run by Dalek puppets and is contained within another Harvester ship. The Doctor reveals that he was aware of it being a Dalek trap, and rescued Case in order to use her skills to stop the Harvester from landing on the planet Tharius and converting the population. The Doctor convinces Case to set the Harvester to self destruct. The Daleks attempt to burn Case's mind out with a neural overload, but the Doctor manages to get her into an escape pod after Albert is killed and escapes to the planet below with Veklin. (AUDIO: Saviour [+]Loading...["Saviour (audio story)"])

Case woke up on Tharius with her memory completely wiped. As she adjusted to her surroundings, she found herself ambushed by a Dalek, which was subsequently killed by Veklin, who informed her that the Doctor was coming to kill her. She then witnessed the Doctor and Veklin arguing about the High Council's orders to kill her. They were then ambushed by robots and her cyborg programming took over, activating her weapons and destroying the robots. However they were separated from the Doctor in the crossfire, and she aids Veklin in tracking him down. She was able to tell Iansa that Veklin was not lying about the Doctor not being the Warbringer and instead was attempting to save the planet. Case was present alongside Veklin when the Doctor attempted to prove to the Germinals and the Incipients that he was the Warbringer to gain their trust. (AUDIO: Consequences [+]Loading...["Consequences (TWDB audio story)"])

After they are imprisoned by the Germinals, who did not believe the Doctor was the Warbringer, Veklin stunned the Doctor in order to remove him from the situation, and shot Case, deciding to leave her behind. She was taken to speak with the Germinal Princeps, Belus, only to find him dead in his private quarters. She was blamed for his death until she discovered a secret passageway in his bedroom and began investigating it with Faren, where they discovered a Dalek control room. She saved Veklin from a Dalek ambush, but they were taken prisoner instead. She was separated from Veklin and Faren, and experimented on by the Daleks when they discovered that her conditioning was not complete. She discovers that she is a Berserker class cyborg and begins to be overwhelmed by her Dalek conditioning, however the Doctor convinces her to reject it and she kills the remaining Daleks on Tharius. The Doctor and Veklin then take Case away from Tharius in a battle TARDIS. The Doctor decides to tell Case the truth of who she is and how they ended up on Tharius. Working with Veklin[[edit] | [edit source]]

Following the events on Tharius, Case agreed to join Veklin's task force, as the Doctor had left her behind and her only other option was to be sent to Gallifrey for experimentation. The other members of the task force didn't trust her due to her Dalek origins.

During an information gathering mission, they were attacked by a small Dalek skirmish force and Veklin was injured. They travel to Haven, a new state of the art Time Lord field hospital to get her medical attention. Upon their arrival at the hospital, they are reunited with the Doctor for the first time since Tharius. While Veklin is taken for medical treatment, Case catches up with the Doctor and explains what she has been doing since their last encounter. She was forced to go into containment by M.O.M. due to her weapon enhancements, leaving her separated from the Doctor and Veklin when the station went into lockdown. M.O.M. attempted to assimilate Case into her systems, and showed her recordings of Veklin trying to convince the Doctor to abandon Case on the station so they can flee and survive. She was saved when Runa was able to reboot the system. After she recovers, she refuses to go back to Gallifrey with Veklin following her earlier willingness to leave her behind, and instead accepts the Doctor's invitation aboard the TARDIS. She discovers that M.O.M. has been transferred into her mind. (AUDIO: A Mother's Love [+]Loading...["A Mother's Love (audio story)"])

Travelling with the Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

After discovering that Case's berserker enhancements are slowly killing her, they travel to Sunspire undercover as a Dalek Killer and her squire to track down a single Berserker Dalek. They join a party of Sunspire citizens intent on tracking down and destroying the Berserker Dalek, however when the Sunspires start getting killed, Case begins to distrust the Doctor, believing he is serving an agenda of his own first and foremost and isn't solely just trying to help her. Upon encountering the Berserker Dalek, it senses her Dalek biology and decides to merge with her to become stronger. However, Case was the stronger personality, and the Berserker algorithm defaulted to her knowledge and strength, giving her a new biology and curing her of the contamination that was killing her. (AUDIO: Berserker [+]Loading...["Berserker (audio story)"])

The Doctor brought her to Memnos in an attempt to recover her missing memories of her life before her Dalek conversion. There she discovered records of a couple called Borudan and Vaia, who she came to believe were her parents, and that she herself was their daughter Karina. However she was unable to find concrete proof that this was the case. The Dalek Time Strategist found her within Memnos through the Dalek hive mind, seeking to convince her to join the Dalek cause. Case accidentally allows the Daleks to invade Memnos when the Doctor connects to her Memnos feed and the Time Strategist is able to read his mind through Case's connection to the Pathweb. The Doctor convinces Case that they are in fact friends and they plan to depart Memnos together before it is destroyed by the Daleks, however Salvin transmats him out without Case, and he witnesses Memnos explode with Case still inside. In reality, the Time Strategist performed an emergency temporal shift to rescue Case at the last moment. (AUDIO: Memnos [+]Loading...["Memnos (audio story)"])

Working for the Daleks[[edit] | [edit source]]

One month later, she began training under the Dalek Facilitator, who was created in order to be able to understand her human side and connect with her in a way that would instil loyalty to the Daleks. The Daleks celebrated her successes with cake and words of encouragement. Case felt that the Doctor had abandoned her to die, and started to feel contempt towards the Time Lords. For her first mission, she destroys Tenacity IV, and in the aftermath the Doctor discovers that she is working for the Daleks. The Time Strategist offers to take her back in time to see her past, but in reality they plug her into Demnos, a machine the Daleks created from technology from Memnos. She encounters the Doctor inside Demnos, and rejects his attempts to reason with her, instead choosing to remain with the Daleks. Nevertheless, she rescues him from being exterminated by the Time Strategist, and allows him and Veklin to escape. (AUDIO: The Hybrid's Choice [+]Loading...["The Hybrid's Choice (audio story)"])
