Category:Songs is for those songs which are a part of the Doctor Who universe. Songs should be placed directly in this category only if they originated in the DWU, and appeared to be heard or sung by characters in a DW narrative — like "The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon". Other types of song belong in one of three other categories:
- If it was in a DWU story and appeared to be heard or sung by characters in the narrative, but originated in the real world — like "Toxic" — it's best put in Category:Songs from the real world. If purely instrumental, like "Colonel Bogey March", it should go in Category:Instrumental compositions from the real world.
- If it was featured on the soundtrack for an episode, but not heard by characters in the narrative — like "Song for Ten" or the Doctor Who theme — it's a part of Category:Incidental and theme music
- If it was not featured in any way in an episode, but was strictly a merchandising tie-in — like "Who is the Doctor" — then it belongs to Category:Songs about the Doctor Who universe.
