Dalek Supreme Type 1
"Dalek Supreme Type 1" was the designation given by the Dalek Survival Guide (PROSE: Dalek Survival Guide) to the Dalek casing used by the Black Dalek Leader whilst operating as Supreme Controller of the Dalek Earthforce during the 2150s Dalek invasion of Earth. (TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth)
Characteristics[[edit] | [edit source]]
As Supreme Controller of the Dalek Earthforce, whom resembled the early Skaro City Daleks the Black Dalek sported a solar energy collection disc and an enlarged Dalek fender as its subordinates did. (TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth)
History[[edit] | [edit source]]
Dalek Invasion[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Black Dalek Leader, supported by a Dalek saucer commander served as Supreme Controller of the Dalek Invasion Force during the 2150s Dalek invasion of Earth, which was eventually thwarted by the First Doctor. (TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth)
Human historians in the post-Time War universe believed that the Dalek command saucer had been destroyed by the volcanic eruption caused when Project Degravitate was thwarted. (PROSE: Dalek: The Astounding Untold History of the Greatest Enemies of the Universe) By another account, the Black Dalek's ship was the sole survivor of the fleet of twelve saucers which comprised the Dalek Earthforce. Badly crippled, the saucer was forced to make a slow return to Skaro, with the Black Dalek reporting the failure to the Dalek Prime. (PROSE: The History of the Daleks)
By the time of the Mechonoid Incident, the Daleks had dispensed with the solar energy collection discs and enlarged Dalek fenders of the Invasion Force in favour of solar slats. The Black Dalek, now in a new casing, was designated Dalek Supreme. (TV: The Chase)
Legacy[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Dalek Survival Guide was aware of unconfirmed reports which suggested that the Black Dalek Supreme of the Dalek Invasion Force had alternate black-and-silver base sections, but also acknowledged that it was "possible" that this referred to a different Dalek in charge of a Dalek Saucer. (PROSE: Dalek Survival Guide)
Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]
Prop[[edit] | [edit source]]
The prop for the Supreme Controller in The Dalek Invasion of Earth was the same prop used earlier in the same serial for the saucer commander, and one of the four originally constructed for use in The Daleks. The production team didn't paint it in time for the show as seen during the attack on the saucer — the Commander went in but the Supreme came out — and it was not seen during the second part of part 2 and the rest of the episode. The Black Dalek seen in The Chase, Mission to the Unknown and The Daleks' Master Plan was depicted using the same prop.[1]
Merchandise[[edit] | [edit source]]
- In 2014, Character Options released a Dalek Invasion of Earth set with the colours of the Black Supreme and Silver Dalek drone applied to the bronze Dalek model.[2]
- A figurine of this Black Dalek was released with issue 99 of Doctor Who: Figurine Collection magazine.
Invalid sources[[edit] | [edit source]]
- The Universal Databank identifies Dalek Supreme as an alternative title for multiple Black Dalek warlords, with one being associated with the 2150s Dalek invasion of Earth and the Mechonoid Incident. It is claimed that both Black Daleks and Gold Daleks were below the Emperor Dalek's Dalek Council.
- The Dalek Handbook's list of Dalek paradigms, by real world appearance, counts the Dalek Earthforce as their own paradigm following the Skaro City Daleks and preceding the "Type III" Silver Daleks.
