Damsel

Damsel

A damsel was a term for a young woman, the literal meaning for the French word "damoisele" of which it originated. It was commonly associated with the term "damsel in distress"; a woman who needed rescuing.

Amy Pond once took offence when the Eleventh Doctor called her a "damsel", associating it with the latter term, before the Doctor explained that he meant it in the literal sense. (COMIC: A Fairytale Life)

"Damsel" was River Song's codename for the Doctor, owing to the fact that he "needed rescuing a lot" of the time. (TV: The Husbands of River Song)
