Edward Kennedy

Edward "Teddy" Kennedy was a United States Senator and the brother of both President John F. Kennedy and Attorney General Robert Kennedy.

Biography[[edit] | [edit source]]

He grew up in a family of staunch Roman Catholic upbringing with his two older brothers. Robert was always the sibling of the deepest belief and greatest faith.

At some point, Edward became a Senator. He became the last-surviving brother after the assassination of John in 1963 and the assassination of Robert in 1968.

In the summer of 1969, Edward had been at a party on the island of Chappaquiddick during the annual Edgartown Regatta at Martha's Vinyard. At around midnight, he was driving his secretary, 25-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, in a car when it plunged off a small wooden bridge and into the harbour. Although Kennedy managed to get ashore, Kopechne drowned. The event would later become known as the Chappaquiddick incident.

In the aftermath, an inquest was held. This gave the news a renewed interest in the many tragedies involving the Kennedy family with many publishers commissioning books about the incident. James Stevens wrote that Edward had "driven the final nail into his family's political coffin". Despite this, he ran for the Senate again in 1970. (PROSE: Who Killed Kennedy)
