Emergency stop
An emergency stop was a method of initiating braking of a vehicle in an emergency, it could be ordered remotely by passengers or others nearby to the vehicle. They were, as the name suggested only for emergencies. Some vehicles had signage explaining this; in 1933 train carriages in England had a plaque reading: "EMERGENCY STOP. ONLY FOR USE IN EMERGENCIES. PENALTY FOR MISUSE £5". (PROSE: Eater of Wasps [+]Loading...["Eater of Wasps (novel)"]) Escalators also had an emergency stop function.
