European Union

The European Union, also known as the EU, (AUDIO: Changes Everything) was a coalition of mostly European nations during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The currency was the Euro, which was accepted in parts of early 21st century London. It was the precursor to the Eurozone. (AUDIO: The Longest Night)

During the Martian Invasion of 1997, after allying with the Ice Warriors, Home Secretary David Staines observed "despite the Euro-sceptics I don't think that the British government has ever threatened to 'smite' the EU before." Following the invasion, the EU was among the powers that made generous reconstruction grants to the UK, although Britain would continue to remember their inaction during the Dying Days for some considerable years. By the 2000s, Sarah Jane Smith observed that to market a new foodstuff would take years of tests to get approval from the EU. However, Bubble Shock! received it in two weeks, launching in Britain and shipping worldwide. (TV: Invasion of the Bane)

During the Miracle of 2011, Greece and Ireland declared bankruptcy while Spain went under, threatening to take the whole European Union down with them. (TV: End of the Road)

By one account, the UK still belonged to the European Union when the Prime Minister signed the Euro-Combine Treaty.
