Guardian of the Gates

H. P. Lovecraft, a Guardian of the Gates. (AUDIO: Guardian At The Gate)

Guardians of the Gates were people born with a duty to mediate between humanity and eldritch forces beyond their understanding, serving as protectors of the Earth.

H. P. Lovecraft, who was descended from nonhuman, submarine beings, was told by his mother about his origins and his role as a Guardian of the Gate. She also encouraged him to practice his imagination. As he grew older and became a writer, Lovecraft realised that he was subconsciously channeling channeling real insights about alien beings into his writings.

When a mysterious orb flung Lovecraft forwards to 2023, he found himself face to face with Giles, the director of P.R.O.B.E., and felt a compulsion to give him his manuscript for The Shadow Out of Time, which included information on a time-travelling race with designs on the Earth. He was certain that this was one of his instincts as a Guardian, and also thought he recognised a fellow Guardian in Giles himself. Giles was not previously aware of the notion but recognised the association, at least in a symbolic sense. However, Lovecraft was unsure of whether the temporal orb itself had been a manifestation of his abilities as a Guardian, or something else that he did not yet understand.
