The gardener at the Hawthorne estate was a member of the House of the Seven Gables, one of the older slices of Michael Brookhaven's timeline. After seeing that his older self, Rhett, would die, he was convinced by Chris Cwej to give up information related to Brookhaven's plans in exchange for being extracted from their shared timeline. He would go into hiding in a Remote colony. (PROSE: The Book of the War)
