Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]
The TARDIS arrives on a colony ship. The Fifteenth Doctor declares that they've arrived. Ruby Sunday asks him where that is. They step out, as the Doctor takes in his surroundings, saying that from the air and artificial mavity, he's guessing a colony ship, a big one. Ruby then asks when they are. The Doctor says that from the ship design he's guessing the Neo-Terran Imperium, which is at least the 450th century. Ruby asks if they're going to explore or what. They suddenly see someone coming, yelling that they've found the saboteurs.
The person orders them to stay right where they are. The Doctor says that there is no need to shout and asks her who she is. She introduces herself as Navitrix Toledo, then asks how they got on the ship and what their plans are. Ruby tells the Doctor that she does not want to be shot in the 450th century as it would be hard to explain to her mum. The Doctor jokes that it would be more deadly for him as he would have to do the explaining. Toledo orders them to stop talking and answer, and begins to recite her authority, but is interrupted by the Doctor who has an idea and pulls out psychic paper. Toledo apologises, saying she was not aware that an Imperial inspector was onboard. The Doctor whispers to Ruby that the psychic paper never fails. Another voice behind them ask them to forgive their comrade's zeal, saying her father built the ship and as such she gets defensive.
Toledo greets Strategos Garcia and apologises, saying she thought they were the saboteurs. Garcia tells her that her dedication is astounding, but to try and not shoot an inspector. The Doctor has moved on to the bit about the saboteurs. Garcia says that he woke up first to checks, then Navitrix Toledo and his son did. Toledo says they were in deep cryo sleep while the ship was headed to its new destination. Ruby asks where, to which Toledo says it is a new planet to expand Imperial radiance across the cosmos. The Doctor tells them to show the damage to him and Ruby, and they will try to help, counting that "imperial radiance" is spread peacefully. Garcia tells them to follow, adding that his son is also investigating the ship. Toledo thanks them for helping, saying they need to reach the planet her father owned.
On their way, Ruby says to the Doctor that this isn’t the first time they’ve encountered someone called Navitrix. The Doctor says that Navitrix isn’t exactly a name, because at this time many humans were grown rather than born, and that it was decided from her birth than she would be a Navigator and so they altered her genes. Ruby says that not having a choice to be what they want is awful. The Doctor agrees but says that it is for survival, adding that mankind had a couple of rough centuries before this empire. Toledo points to the damage of the ship, saying that it can only be man-made and there's no change of a mere accident. The Doctor concurs, saying that the ship is lovingly crafted and something like that would not happen. Ruby asks Toledo if she heard right that her friend said that her father made the ship. Toledo confirms, saying that it was many years ago and his great work to save them from catastrophe. The Doctor says that he understands why she cares so much and suggest they split up and check around.
The Doctor tells Ruby that as amazing as he finds the ship, he is not quite onboard with their mission. Ruby asks if she didn't say they were escaping a catastrophe, but the Doctor says that when it comes to the Neo-Terran Imperium, those are usually man-made. Ruby asks if they destroyed their planet so badly that they had to move to a new one, but the Doctor tells her that the same thing is happening in her own time and to not let the gilded ships and uniforms distract her. They hear a weird mechanical noise, which Ruby asks what was. They then see a small blue creature, with a small container strapped to its back, that says "Hi… hi…”. The Doctor tells Ruby that that is something new and that is brilliant.
The creature runs away. The Doctor tells Ruby to quickly follow him as he follows the grease stains left on the floor by the creature. Ruby asks what is that happening up ahead of them. The Doctor says that somebody is down and the creature is melting into the wall. Ruby urges them to check on him. Toledo yells that Tacticron Garcia is down. A horrified Strategos Garcia asks her if she saw who did it and tells he will boil the person alive. Toledo says that whatever it was, she will shoot a hole through it for damaging the ship. The Doctor says that he and Ruby saw something but that they aren't going to believe it and that there's no need for shooting. Ruby says it was a little guy dressed in bits and bops from the ship, saying he was adorable, then asks if she heard "shoot". Toledo and Garcia in unison asks what she means with "a little guy".
Garcia says that they must be insane, as of course it is the creature's fault. The Doctor says that it is quite simple if they think about it. Ruby tells him not to antagonise the blokes with large guns. The Doctor goes through the facts; all damage has been man-made, as they told him. Nobody saw the creature doing damage. Toledo says that if the creature even exists, and that the Doctor could be lying. The Doctor concurs that he could, but that he has one big piece of evidence in his favour: Love. Garcia asks what that means. The Doctor breaks open a panel, and asks them not to shoot him for it and just watch.
Toledo asks the Doctor if he is insane, telling him that the ship is her father's legacy, and to get away from it. The Doctor says that he knows he loved it, as it would give her a future, and so that love summoned the creature, as the creature appears. Ruby says that she told them it was a little guy that’s kinda adorable. Garcia asks what kind of filthy alien that is. The Doctor says that it is a Klabautermann, and that it is not a "filthy" alien, but a physical manifestation of love and asks him how he can even use that word. The Doctor says that when somebody loves a ship so much they put their heart and soul into it, it creates a beacon and so that little guy comes from beyond the veil and helps out, ad it feeds on that love. Toledo asks him if he means that the creature is not the saboteur. The Doctor says that he is not and that he has been fixing what somebody else has been breaking.
Toledo says that that is amazing, but asks who is then the saboteur. The Doctor says that that is quite simple to guess, and asks who woke up first. Toledo asks what he is implying. Garcia tells her to not listen to the strangers. Ruby realises then that Garcia wanted the planet Toledo's dad owned. The Doctor says that considering the ship was her father's work of love, he bets she was among the emergency squad. Toledo turns to Strategos Garcia, asking if it is true that he betrayed her. He then says it was not betrayal and that he did most of the work that gave her parent the ship, and that it was rightfully his. Toledo tells him that he can explain that to a judge when they arrive on the new planet.
Toledo thanks the Doctor and Ruby for their help. The Doctor tells her to just make sure to handle Garcia's trial fairly as he is a fellow living being. Toledo concurs, much like the little guy next to her and says that maybe the empire's policies about aliens should change. The Klabautermann says "Hiii- hiii-". Ruby says that she is going to be in charge when they reach the new planet, as it falls to her. Toledo says that she already had plans not to take power, at least not totally. The Doctor says that this is quite enlightened of her, and that he approves. Toledo says that she learned from her father that working together with others is better than working over them. The Klabautermann says "Hiiii- hiii- hiii!". The Doctor says that he thinks the creature says she is right.
Back in the TARDIS, the Doctor asks Ruby where they should go now. Ruby says that she doesn't know, and after meeting the little guy, she wants to meet more aliens. The Doctor approves of the idea, saying that they can visit some old friends of his, but that they need to make a stop first. Ruby asks what for, and the Doctor says that they need some sunscreen and sunglasses. Ruby asks if they're going to a beach planet. The Doctor says that they're going somewhere a bit more toasty, as they're going to visit a star. Ruby asks if there are aliens living on suns. The Doctor says that there are so many wonderful things in the universe to see. Ruby then says they should go then.
