Space's frozen. The Doctor and Ruby face a new foe

Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Doctor and Ruby Sunday has travelled to the Asterion Field to see a luxury liner in space, but are met by a wreckage and a direct view to space itself. Upon seeing it, Ruby disappointedly note that she didn't think the Doctor was being literal. The Doctor then exclaims that everything is wrong with the place. Ruby quieries how they are breathing and the Doctor tells her that the sonic screwdriver tells him they're inside a bubble of frozen space because something nullified the explosion and the shockwave, deducting that there must be survivors. At the same time, someone calls out that they hear talking.

The Doctor greets her, asking what an Imperial Navitrix is doing in this place. Ruby asks what a Navitrix is. Navitrix Ortega tells her that she is the navigator of the ship, or what used to be a ship. The Doctor says it wasn't supposed to be a military vessel, as it was for tourism. Ortega says she would love to tell a story but wants to leave. The Doctor agrees but wants to check for dangers, making Ortega realise they aren't the rescue team. The Doctor tells her that they will help her nonetheless, which Ortega is thankful for as she doesn't want to stay around a thing there. Ruby is confused, asking the Doctor what's going on, then sees it.

Ruby exclaims that she got a weird feeling. The thing exclaims that it has gotten fresh food and more energy. Ruby asks the thing if it is some kind of space lizard. The Kua'Mara exclaims that is it space incarnate and it hungers. The Doctor calls for Ruby, who tells him she found someone that doesn't seem nice. The Doctor sees it and tells Ruby to walk towards him as they're dangerous. The Kua'Mara exclaims that it can smell him and will feast on his energy. Ruby guesses that the creature is not good news.

The Doctor tells her that it is a Kua'Mara and a science accident turned its people into what it currently is, however the Kua'Mara says that it was no accident but due to "tImElOrD — tRiCkErY". The Doctor retorts that the truth is that it wrecked its own planet. Ruby thinks it is a less good idea to antagonise it because it looks dangerous. The Doctor tells her that unless it gets closer, it cannot steal their kinetic energy. The Kua'Mara exclaims it will do more than that. Ruby asks what kinetic means, and the Doctor tells her that it means movement and that the Kua'Mara feast on it to maintain its shape otherwise it will fall apart. The Kua'Mara taunts them that there is no way to escape frozen space. The Doctor realises something, and tells Ruby to run.

As there is a loud "crash!!", the Doctor note that they seem to have angered it and calls for a plan. Ruby asks if he hasn't got something in the TARDIS to deal with it, but the Doctor tells her that the frozen space also affects the TARDIS. Ortega reminds the Doctor that he had a plan. The Doctor confirms, asking if any canisters of coolant survived the crash, which Ortega confirms, but says that they were too far away to grab. The Doctor tells her not to worry, as he's gonna ask the Kua'Mara for help. Ruby asks him if he needs help, and the Doctor tells her that he does because she's the best.

Ruby asks the Doctor if he is going to dodge the Kua'Mara's attacks, to which the Doctor tells her not to worry as he was once cosmic dodgeball champion. Ruby tells him that it is about to glide over to them. The Doctor taunts the creature, and the Kua'Mara tells him to feel its rage. The Doctor protects himself with a shield. Ruby asks him if he's okay and he tells her that he is protected from frontal assault, prompting the Kua'Mara to go for an attack from behind, but the Doctor warns it that it will regret it.

Navitrix Ortega asks him what his plan was with the canisters. As the Kua'Mara is searching for them, it exclaims that the Doctor can't hide. The Doctor tells Ortega that as much as the Kua'Mara's bodies have been altered, they're still living beings and even though the body parts are seperated, they still react naturally as they should. Ortega ponders if he has planned to blow the creature up with canisters that don’t explode, but the Doctor tells her that destroying the Kua'Mara would implode the frozen space bubble, plus he never kills. Ortega asks what will happen then, but Ruby says the Doctor has it parked.

Ortega is confused what "parked" means. The Doctor gives the word to Ruby. Ruby says that as the Kua'Mara is a reptile, it is cold blooded. Ortega tells her they're in the middle of space and it is already cold, even with the bubble. Ruby continues, saying that the Doctor mentioned freezing space, pondering whether it could be about movement. Ortega joins in, saying that is means heat, saying that the Kua'Mara is heated because of energy. The Doctor agrees, concluding that if they cool it, it will lose energy, and weaken the bubble. Ruby finished the sentence, saying that when the bubble is weakened they can use that window to escape, to which the Doctor says he couldn't have explained it better.

The creature searches for the Doctor, and the Doctor tells them they need to hurry as he is not sure they can keep ducking it. Ruby asks what she can do, and the Doctor tells her she can tie the canisters together and he'll do the rest. Ortega asks what she can do, even if she can't move much. The Doctor tells her she can use her tools to look for spatial anomalies. Ortega mentions the portals and asks what to look for, to which the Doctor says that she has to look for any particles that appear just before one of its spatial fissures manifest. Ortega catches them and says she will try to run diagnostics through the area and create a predictive model. Ruby prepares.

Ortega laments that the creature destroyed her ship and expresses happiness they can take it out. The Doctor reminds her that they're only going to freeze the Kua'Mara for a while. Ortega says she thought it would kill the creature, the Doctor however says that even they it is dangerous, it is still a sentient being and not guilty of being who it is, and the fact that someone on his planet messed up an experiment is not its fault. The Doctor further says that while he is around, nobody dies because that's how he works. Ortega protests that it is a monster that feeds on people, but the Doctor tells her that nobody is a monster and that it is only trying to survive. The Kua'Mara exclaims that everyone will die. The Doctor continues, saying that it is being a bit theatrical and tells Ortega to shoot around to make it dodge.

Ortega picks up particles, noting that it is about to teleport in front of them. The Doctor asks Ruby if she is ready, as they only have one chance. Ruby tells him she doesn't know how ready she can be to stop a teleporting lizardman. The Doctor tells her she does a great job, asking Ortega to tells them when. Navitrix Ortega tells them the count increases and it's gonna happen soon. The Doctor says he can smell the crack in space and tells Ruby to get ready. The Kua'Mara exclaims that the Doctor will satiate its hunger. Ruby throws the canisters at it. And the Doctor exclaims that it is turning into an Ice Lolly, and how proud he is of himself.

The Kua'Mara expresses surprise at what just happened, saying that he can't do this. The Doctor tells it that he can and did, and taunts it with a "cold shoulder" joke. Ruby asks if they should be going before the bubble collapses, which the Doctor agrees with, making a another "cold" joke. The Doctor asks if it is too much, asking if he can do one more. Navitrix Ortega says that she is enjoying it all, but gets back on the subject of a ship to get out of there. The Doctor agrees, saying he was too into it, telling them to get back to the TARDIS. Ruby taunts the Kua'Mara one last time, telling it to get a warm cuppa or it will catch a cold. The Doctor laughs.
