James Whale was a director who had many contacts with the North Los Angeles Cabal. Upon asking too many favours from the group, he was assigned to direct an adaptation of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, a movie that would consume the rest of his life as a physical embodiment of Production Hell. - In real life, James Whale was best known as the director of Frankenstein and its sequel The Bride of Frankenstein. He was played by Ian McKellen in the film Gods and Monsters.
