Jan Ostowicz

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

Pilot Officer Jan Ostowicz was a pilot in the Polish Air Force during World War II. After Nazi Germany conquered Poland in September 1939, Ostowicz was forced to leave behind his friends and family as he fled the country on an arduous journey across Europe. He travelling to Romania, then France, and finally to Great Britain to aid the United Kingdom in the war effort.

On 27 August 1940, during the Battle of Britain, the Eighth Doctor recruited Ostowicz and his colleague, Wilhelm Rozycki, to investigate unusual losses suffered by the Royal Air Force, as requested by Winston Churchill. Ostowicz and the Doctor were paired together in Ostowicz aircraft during the aerial search. He and the Doctor returned to base when Rozycki and Liv Chenka were abducted by the Heliyon.

Ostowicz fought together with other Allied pilots to repel the Heliyon ship's attack on London. The Poles' performance impressed the British and they were allowed to engage the Luftwaffe starting on 28 August.

Ostowicz met the Doctor and Liv again before they departed London, and he informed them that Rosycki had been killed fighting the Germans. Ostowicz tried to find comfort in the fact that his friend had died fighting for a cause he believed in. (AUDIO: Their Finest Hour)
