John Richards was the writer of the Short Trips audio story Dead Media. He also contributed to the book Queers Dig Time Lords.

Outside the Doctor Who universe, Richards is a sketch comedy writer. He wrote and co-created the 2012 ABC comedy mini-series Outland, which is about a gay science fiction fan club.

Currently, Richards is the head writer and producer of Night Terrace, a BBC Radio 4 full-cast audio comedy series about time travel, as a co-creator. Night Terrace features cameos from Louise Jameson and Nicholas Briggs, and draws clear inspiration from Doctor Who. This project came about when their production team formed to make Splendid Chaps, a year-long podcast celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. Further episodes of that podcast series were released in 2017 and 2018.
