The life-optimisation engine was a black goo which Abigail Forehill found in the 2000s. It attached itself to her and erased people including her parents, boyfriend, flatmate and a sizeable portion of Cardiff. It was defeated by Abigail with help from Ianto Jones. (AUDIO: Ex Machina)
