Lively was the assistant of Carruthers who helped in an investigation. She chastised him for telling a superstitious rumour about the line. Carruthers' sent him along the train in the dark. He had been employed by Carruthers since he was 14 after writing a letter to her explaining that he was the illegitimate son of her husband.
