Lucien (Scorched Earth)

Lucien was a member of the French Resistance during the Second World War. Towards the end of the war, he encountered the Furio and used her to enact revenge on the Nazis and any collaborators for what they did to France.

Biography[[edit] | [edit source]]

After the fall of France[[edit] | [edit source]]

Lucien noted that when Nazi Germany's armies marched into France in 1940 and occupied Paris, there was hope among the population that daily life would continue as normal. However, when the French tricolour was replaced with the Nazi swastika and Marshal Pétain was installed as the puppet head of the Vichy government, Lucien realised such hopes of normality were futile. A committed patriot, he joined the French Resistance in order to rescue the soul of France. His position meant he saw little real action and he longed for a way to strike back at the enemy directly.

On 1 January 1944, Lucien investigated a crater where he first encountered the Furio while she was only a tiny spark. She spoke to him telepathically and explained she fed on and cleansed negative emotions. Lucien saw that his opportunity had come and he housed the Furio in his cigarette lighter. He directed her as a secret weapon against the Germans, devouring their tanks, planes and men. Lucien and the Furio developed a strong psychic link. The Furio went as far as to view Lucien as a father figure.

In June, the Allies invaded France and began the liberation of the country from German control. Yet Lucien struggled to find peace and reasoned that although the Germans would soon be defeated, the French collaborators had forever tainted the courts and the political system and poisoned the French spirit. As such, Lucien expanded his personal crusade against the Germans to include any collaborators.

Meeting with the Doctor[[edit] | [edit source]]

On 4 July 1944, Lucien was in the liberated village of Vestille, near Rouen. He summoned the Furio to root out Jorgen, Klaus and Max, three German soldiers hiding in a the nearby forest. The next day, Lucien led the public head-shaving of a woman named Clementine for collaboration, as she fell in love with a since-deceased German soldier. The Sixth Doctor's companion, Flip Ramon, disrupted the proceedings and denounced Lucien as a bully. Lucien relented but was still intent on punishing Clementine.

On 6 June, he befriended Constance Clarke, who was more sympathetic to his actions than Flip was, but Lucien revealed his excesses when he sent the Furio to burn down Clementine's apartment with Flip and Clementine were inside. The two women were rescued and the Doctor confronted Lucien. In response, Lucien set the Furio against the Doctor and his companions as well as the German prisoners of war. The Doctor saved them all by convincing the Furio to travel instead to Berlin, the hate-filled heart of the Third Reich.

After the Furio was neutralised while following a British Army convoy, the Doctor and Constance convinced Lucien to let go of his hate and anger and release the Furio. Although the breaking of their psychic link threatened to kill him, he ultimately survived and allowed the Furio her freedom, after which the Doctor directed her to Skaro. Lucien abandoned his quest for vengeance and turned himself in to the British so he could face justice for his actions. (AUDIO: Scorched Earth)
