Nominative determinism

Nominative determinism

Nominative determinism was the theory that one's inclinations and/or prospects might be affected by the name given to them. (AUDIO: The Power of River Song)

The Tenth Doctor asked Rose Tyler if she wanted to meet Mr Tickle, but then decided that he might be annoying since he lived in a universe of nominative determinism. (AUDIO: Infamy of the Zaross)

Petronella Osgood once wrote a paper on the subject of nominative determinism with regards to alien species names. She posited, as River Song would also later describe, that alien races whose names resembled the form given to "villains [in] old B movies" might, as a result, be more inclined towards invasion and hostility. River referred to the Wampeerix as one such example. (AUDIO: The Power of River Song)
