Paul was a monk who lived in Cumbria in the 13th century.
In 1207, Paul rode to alert an abbot that the bells of Saint John, which was the phone on the outside of the TARDIS, were ringing. He accompanied the abbot as the elder man went to inform the Eleventh Doctor of this development. Paul then escorted the Doctor to the TARDIS. After picking up the phone, the Doctor informed Paul that a woman was speaking to him, which caused Paul to cross himself. (TV: The Bells of Saint John)
