History

Roman invasion

When the Romans came to Ancient Britain, they slaughtered those who fought to protect their homelands. (PROSE: Whotopia: The Ultimate Guide to the Whoniverse ^[+]Loading...["Whotopia: The Ultimate Guide to the Whoniverse (reference book)"]) After several failed attempts, the Roman Empire succeeded in conquering Britain in 43. Barbara Wright's casual mention of coming from Londinium during a visit to Rome in the year 64 led to her and Ian Chesterton being abducted and sold into slavery, as the recently conquered Britons were not then Roman citizens. As noted by Gwen Cooper, a Roman fort was built in the Welsh town of Gelligaer around 75 AD. When a Roman soldier who appeared in Cardiff in the 2000s mentioned Gelligaer while shouting in Latin, Jack Harkness suggested that the soldier had been on his way there and when time had splintered he had ended up in their present day. The soldier then disappeared when Torchwood Cardiff opened the Cardiff Space-Time Rift to resolve the crisis. (TV: End of Days)

The Pandorica

By 102 AD, the Eleventh Doctor noted that the Romans had invaded Britain several times in this time period. Amy Pond claimed that the "Invasion of the hot Italians" was her favourite topic at school, adding that she got marked down for the title. In the post-Pandorica timeline that followed, the Pandorica was discovered under Stonehenge in 107 and taken back to Rome (PROSE: The Visual Dictionary ^[+]Loading...["The Visual Dictionary (2010 reference book)"]) in 118. (TV: The Big Bang ^[+]Loading...["The Big Bang (TV story)"])

Later history

In the 2nd century, the Roman Ninth Legion invaded Aberdeen, Scotland. The Gatekeeper at the time, Kar, allowed a single Eater of Light to pass through the portal; she thought it would destroy the legion, and become so weakened in the process that it would be easy to defeat. Instead, the creature became stronger after feeding on the Romans and began to darken the sky, threatening the world. The Twelfth Doctor, along with his companions Bill Potts and Nardole, worked with the Picts and the few surviving Romans to drive the Eater of Light back into the portal. In 305, the Eighth Doctor and Charley Pollard stopped the Nimon from invading a Roman fort in Britannia.
