::: To be fair, though, the BBC has never declared River Song a companion either, yet people seem to have no issues calling her one. Possible compromise is to categorize her as "honorary companion" as has been done with Benton and Yates. Certainly the "must travel in the TARDIS" rule no longer applies (and never has, otherwise Liz Shaw wouldn't qualify as a companion).
