::::: I don't understand why you would want the decades merged because a single character (or a couple) overlap? As it stands any reader can go to a specific decade and instantly see which characters were serving in that decade. If we merge categories certain characters have unclear dates so their serving decade would be unclear. For example; if we combined the 1950s-1970s, as you suggested, Turner would be sat in that category and it would be unclear if they served in the 1950s, 60s or 70s whereas the only information we currently have is that they served in the 60s.
