Hey OS12, there's been a recurring issue on the page [[Russell McGee]] that's been detailed in the edit history there as well as mine and Shambala's talk page. Shambala said it was getting a bit over her head and that it should go to you or Scrooge, so I'll just give a brief summary of the issue. | |||
A user, [[User:RussellMcGee77]] added a large biography to this page about a week ago that was basically an advertisement for the writer in question. I reverted this, as it was obviously the person editing his own page, and said so in the edit summary. He tried to reinstate the edit, and I again reverted it. Then, a day or two ago, [[User:Emily Solt]] added in roughly the same information based on his IMDB and Goodreads biographies, which were written by McGee. I removed this again and alerted Shambala, noting my concerns about self promotion, the potential that the two users were the same person (more on that in a bit) and plagiarism. Shambala then protected the page so only auto-confirmed users could edit, but this didn't help, as Emily Solt then added in the IMDB biography, once again written by McGee. I removed this, and Solt finally applied an edit that still read like an advertisement for McGee but wasn't a direct copy of either Goodreads or IMDB. I've left that edit alone, since it might be against the rules but I think an admin should survey it rather than me. | |||
However, the edit summary Solt left concerned me, as it stated that the new biography was written by Nick Krohn, and linked two his Goodreads account, as well as stating that "'''We’ve''' followed the wiki rules" [emphasis my own]. | |||
Nick Krohn's Goodreads account showed that he had worked on fan anthologies with McGee in the past (anthologies that McGee actually had created redlinks to in one of his page edits that Shambala ended up removing), so this prompted concerns about conflicts of interest, and I thought perhaps that Solt had worked with McGee on one of them as well.
