River went to a dig in the 52<sup>nd</sup> century to find why professor Pierson found some pages of her dairy. Suspecting a trap, she didn’t intend to use her vortex manipulator, but borrowed an eccho gun prototype to use instead. To that issue, she had to be accompanied by a Hugo, a solidogram whose aim was not only to check on her use of the prototype, but to assert her potential professorship. However, when trying to use it, she found herself catapulted in 2014. She realised that her ability to time travel was limited to 1936, 1962, 1988 and 2014. A shield present during all those years didn’t allow her to escape. She had to investigate the Mortimer legacy: ''Learn the rules of the house, Find the key to the door, Save the bird of the nest, draw the isle on the shore''. | |||
Her attempt to solve the riddle brought her to meet and become friend of many member of a peculiar family, number of which where gay during a period where that was generally not accepted: the Mortimer family. It turned out that she was the one who set the trap in order to right the wrong she unwillingly did when she tried to uncover the truth. She used the echo gun to partially reverse the deadly impact that hit Madeleine Mortimer in 1936 when shot by her own husband by the same echo gun. This process had to be maintained until 2014, locking River Song as well as two versions of Hugo in the process. | |||
Madeleine was then able to witness the wedding of her great-grandson Harry with his boy friend. River was the official celebrant of the ceremony, which she did in the name of the president of Earth and the Lady Universe herself. She then brought Madeleine back in 1936 to say goodbye to her children before disappearing, as River Song was only able to completely stop the consequences of the shoot. | |||
