Talk:Jenny (Human Nature TV character)

Why does she have "TV character" in her name?[[edit source]]

Surely it should just be "Jenny (Human Nature)". I'm not good with the rename tags so I'm just commenting this. Xx-connor-xX 00:22, December 29, 2016 (UTC)

It's because of the novel of the same name. That story has Jenny (Human Nature novel character). It also has Joan Redfern (novel character).

Completely forgot about the novel! Thanks. Xx-connor-xX 00:35, December 29, 2016 (UTC)

Awww... the novel is MUCH better! Anyway, to resurrect this long-dormant discussion, I must say that I agree that the current dab name is awkward and the two pages should probably be merged as Joan Redfern was. Even if they aren't merged, we need to find a new way to dab them. I don't like the word "character" in the page name like that. Makes them sound like a fictional character in-universe. How about we use "(Human Nature)" for novel characters and "(The Family of Blood)" for TV characters? NightmareofEden 23:08, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

Having quickly just looked over the novel, is it pretty clear to me that the two Jennys are not one and the same. The only thing that is the same are their names, and even then there can be more than one person called Jenny in a given area.
New dabs could work, but I'd advise against merging. A pity, as I did write up a version of the page that conflated them before double checking the sources. 13:01, 28 May 2022 (UTC)

Ah. I've experienced both versions but I didn't actually remember anything about the book Jenny as she's not a significant character, but I checked my copy and you're right. Even so, we still need to change that dab term as having "character" like that in the dab name is very confusing, and, as I said, makes it look like they are a fictional character in-universe. Don't really think I can get behind using (The Family of Blood) for a character introduced in TV: Human Nature, but "character" has always seemed like a problem to me as well.
The other relevant precedent, which is actually a bit newer, is how we deal with untitled stories. We seem to add additional information only when necessary, so we've got Chantelle (Untitled) and Ian (Untitled 11), but Police officer (TVC 696 Untitled) to differentiate it from Police officer (TVC 740 Untitled).
This opens up the possibility of including some form of disambiguation with the story name without needing to add a qualifier like "character". Maybe Jenny (Human Nature TV)? Jenny (Human Nature 2007)? We'll have to think through some more options. Not there yet.

If we're using the untitled stories as basis for these dabs, shouldn't we make an acronym instead of using the full title? So something like Jenny (HM 2007) or Jenny (DW S3,E8)? 03:01, 29 May 2022 (UTC)
Well the most direct analogue might be Jenny (DW05 Human Nature) or Jenny (Human Nature DW05), in my mind. It's just iffy because we don't really have an agreed upon acronym for this (post-2012). Starting with "Human Nature" in the dab term does massively help with searchability, though.
Problem is, all the options we've explored so far seem wrong somehow. There's gotta be something more elegant.
