The Rani's exile from Gallifrey

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

The Rani's life on Gallifrey ended when she was exiled by the Time Lords after an incident involving her giant mice. The Rani took a TARDIS and settled on Miasimia Goria, (PROSE: Divided Loyalties) under the name of "the Rani". (TV: The Mark of the Rani)

The exile may have occurred to the incarnation of the Rani faced by the Sixth and Seventh Doctors, who by one account was the Rani's long-lived first incarnation. (PROSE: Time and the Rani [+]Loading...["Time and the Rani (novelisation)"]) Another account indicated that the Rani regenerated several times between leaving Gallifrey and meeting the Sixth Doctor. (PROSE: The Master [+]Loading...["The Master (reference book)"])

Chronology[[edit] | [edit source]]

One Celestial Intervention Agency document dated the Rani's exile to 101,172 TL, or 30,464 AD. This dating would place it five years before the Doctor and Susan's escape from Gallifrey. (PROSE: CIA File Extracts [+]Loading...["CIA File Extracts (novel)"])

The Scrolls of Gallifrey indicated that the Rani's exile occurred between the First Omega Crisis and the Decayed Master's assassination of the President. (PROSE: The Legacy of Gallifrey [+]Loading...["The Legacy of Gallifrey (short story)"])

History[[edit] | [edit source]]

Some of the Rani's mice, as a result of an experiment, grew to enormous size and ate the Lord President's pet cat. They also bit the President himself. The Master, another exiled Time Lord, told the Rani that the Time Lords' made a cardinal error in exiling her. (TV: The Mark of the Rani)

According to the Scrolls of Gallifrey, the President who lost his pet cat and was Pandad IV, who also lost his Chancellor, Socra, a CIA agent who was devoured by the mice. The incarnation of Pandad IV attacked by the mice ended up regenerating into a new incarnation. (PROSE: The Legacy of Gallifrey)

The Time Lord messenger also indicated that he lost his cat in this incident. (AUDIO: The Man Who Wasn't There)

By one account, the incident involving the Rani's mice eating President Drall's cat occurred during the Rani's time at the Prydon Academy and the Rani was not actually exiled for it, continuing to live on Gallifrey for the rest of her youth. Feeling that she would never be forgiven for the incident, Ushas eventually opted out of Time Lord society, becoming a renegade. (PROSE: Divided Loyalties)

According to the Seventh Doctor, the Rani had nothing but contempt for all other Time Lords since her exile from Gallifrey. However, after hearing this, the Rani bluntly stated that her contempt started long before her exile. (TV: Time and the Rani)
