Spoilers aren't cool
We have a strict definition of "spoiler" that you may find a bit unusual. Basically, a spoiler, to us, is anything that comes from a story which has not been released yet. So, even if you've got some info from a BBC press release or official trailer, it basically can't be referenced here. In other words, you gotta wait until the episode has finished its premiere broadcast to start editing about its contents. Please check the spoiler policy for more details.

If this is okay to discuss here (tell me if it is not) then if I may continue. RTD felt it would be disrespectful to continue it full stop at the time. And anyway He could not simply write her out as she was the main character the characters you listed were all side characters. Could Doctor Who continue as Doctor Who with out the Doctor? Could you have Tourchwood without Gwen. Or let’s put it this way Batman with out a Batman (emphasis on A). Liz Sladen was irreplaceable. It's always good to hear from you, Anastasia. I hope you're OK, life's treating you well.
Torchwood was always a team, which gradually got decimated as time dragged on. You could eventually lose the entire original lineup, and still be able to continue. If Jack wasn't the lead, why was he the team leader?
Writing out a main character...it happened in Only Fools and Horses, with Grandad, one of the main leads. His actor, Lennard Pearce, died in the mid-80s, and a funeral was held for the character in "Strained Relations", which also introduced Uncle Albert as his replacement. Such could easily be done with Sladen.
I never got into Torchwood; it was just too full of sex, violence, swearing and farts.
Batman...Nightwing could easily fill in. The suits are similar, and the motives are, too. But Bruce Wayne is always Batman. Complicated, I know.
Honestly, he should've done something at the time, rather than the nine-year wait.
I'm speaking this on behalf of a friend, the one who started writing a series to help him cope with everything a few years ago. He's rather PO'd at present (putting it nicely, not profanity), because the obstacles to getting it recognised just keep getting bigger. The aforementioned issues of getting it to TV, and also apparently somebody who he really wants to work with, has wanted to work with for some years, has apparently quit stardom. This individual is integral to his idea.

one does not nee to be the team leader to be the Lead, look at Star Trek discovery the main character doses not become the team team leader till 4 seasons in. Gwen is the POV the main character the stroy is her story and the way she sees the rest of the world (and yes Tourchwood does have it’s flaws it finds itself in the last half of season two however and then kills half the team of). You also have to consider that RTD considered it disrespectful to make money of a person who is dead. Something I agree with. Ten years you can start using the supporting cast ad possibly recast them but right away it would not have been SJA with out SJS. Also they would need to change the name which means you have to mess around with all the rights and there is and awful lot of paperwork.

for your friend may I suggest trying to get in the theatre that is much easier. Aswell as creating mini movies with a profit motive, these kind of things can get you notice. I watched a little bit of Discovery. It's crapola (not profanity). This is coming from a man who watched Next Gen and Voyager when very young, and DS9 and TOS, and some of Enterprise the series when at high school.
If he, and all the stars, unanimously wanted to end it right there and then, maybe they should've all been written out, a la the ending of Blackadder Goes Forth: they run off to face something that is more powerful than anything thus far, then fade to a sombre final shot. I mean, it would've made some sense, since we have had neither sight nor sound nor smell of them, almost like they never existed.
The friend had started writing three years ago, nine years after the axing, as a way to keep himself sane, and also to overcome the absolute final ending that they did; they all reunite by chance after going through rough patches (civil partnership annulment, laid off from a secretive and uncaring employer, film project collapse, etc.), stop some alien threat, realise they've missed it, form a relationship (which explains why I asked a while ago about Who's portrayals of multi-person relationships) and take the house as their own, restoring to how it was, all the stuff back how it was, and picking up the torch from where she left off. Adapting a few untelevised ideas.
Regards his idea, it wasn't meaning changing the name; it was a sequel series. How can I liken it? Who the series is essentially Heartbeat (the 90s/00s drama about a policeman and female doctor in a small village in Yorkshire). SJA is The Royal (a spinoff from Heartbeat, set in a hospital that it regularly alluded to, and crossing over, at least in the first few series). The friend's sequel series is The Royal Today (a short-lived soap opera set in the hospital from The Royal, but in contemporary times).
Recasting...it's thorny. Who fans are by and large purists, and won't react well to recasts on TV. That's why the friend, he's loathe to change the cast. Some of the originals, he's wanted to work with for a long time, but a recent convention shows that one appears to have quit altogether (conflicting sources) and a lot of tats, which has really got him frustrated.
The friend is a good guy, but he thinks that the long approach will mean his idea will be absolutely impossible to attain, as everybody follows the large studios and more famous writers, who never listen to what the fans want. I am familiar with heartbeat having watched a few years back (I did not know about the spins however thank you) I myself believe it was good where they ended. Liz Sladen died I would not want another episode to come out immediately or even two years latter with the cast. The ten year wait was for me the perfect length of time.

and whilst your friend has dreams I am honestly sorry to say that you do need start at the bottom and work your way up. They could pitch it as a novel or this first episode as a short story the BBC books. But change the plans view it as a first (second, third or however many) draft of the finished product. The question is do they care more about the narrative or the characters? If the plot then you could change the characters names modify things a bit to remove all licensed elements, then pitch it to Netflix (Amazon, Sky, or some independent streaming service) as a deconstruction of teens fight monsters show in kids channels. This way you get the plot individuals who are fundamentally the same characters just with the serial number filed off. If someone tries to Sue about call parody. (Just make sure it is not too close. Here we go again. Honestly, the ten years wait...I think it worked well with stuff like T2 Trainspotting, but not here. The ending we got...just in the middle, with nothing to say of what happened next, I despised it. Honestly, the Blackadder Goes Forth-like ending I proposed would've been better, as nobody wanted to continue at all, and we got nothing at all from the gang since, like they never existed. It would've made more sense.
The friend feels that changing it would make the changed work just a cheap copy (like some of those cheap and tacky superhero KO figures they sell at the back of the convenience shop over the road), so it isn't an option. As he says, and I agree, they kept Torchwood going since its axing, they kept Class going since its axing (despite that being not very popular by and large), they look set to keep Who going forever, why not do something for the fourth string, beyond a limited-run audio series that seriously feels too little too late?
He could give it to BBC Books; that may be the best option, as some of the envisioned stars of his SCL:AI series appear to have been seriously tatted (he despises inkings), and one of them has apparently quit stardom altogether yet still goes on the convention circuit, milking the past glories (look this stuff up on Facebook, "Fantom Events"). Honestly, we just don't know (I help him with the writing). Getting this series recognised somehow would mean a lot to him, but any way of doing so seems absolutely impossible. Should we just quit and never return to it, or what?
Do you have any picks for recasting the stars?

I would not call stripping the who elements of a cheap copy I would call it expanding beyond and restricting universe. This way you have the opportunity to construct you own lore. The CBBC series Leonardo started off as a rejected Doctor Who spin of centring of theDoctor at the Academy, and then after the first season grew in to something else constructing its own world. Some very popular novels even started out as fanfic before being stripped of all licensed material, if you want look for similar things you have most of the EU in which a person have the right to a sing,e creation creates and entire world around them (the largest example would be Faction Paradox, or possibly Iris Wildthyme as that has not many who concepts (somethings that is)). But the fact is the Books are your best bet if you want the Beeb to do it (this is not a promise and they may ask for some changes. Don’t right the whole novel before giving the pitch just the first three or so chapters pitch it to BBC Books or Penguin books. The reason I can not promise that it will get picked up is because you have a competitor in the form of Big Finish’s Rani series which is much less of a deconstruction.). The fact is sadly it is not going to be on TV for a long time and if you don’t want to wait that long may i suggest using elements of the plot to create something new and brilliant.

in regards to the SJA continuation I have said my views, RTD’s views why it happened told you it was justified in my eyes and you have disagreed with all of my points.it seems to me you disagree with the premise this is valid but I do not share your opinion. Thanks very much for your consideration. However, I'm no fan of audio series (I find it difficult to concentrate on them). And also, me and a friend (who I've regularly alluded to), we have an idea for a series where SJ's nearest and dearest reunite after going through rough patches, form a relationship and move back into the big house, resolving to pick up where she left off. This series appears to leave our idea null and void (from what I've read), and we're both not happy about it (in his case, that's putting it lightly).

I'm not quite sure how Redacted would render your idea null and void though, as it doesn't really alter the status quo much, apart from perhaps Rani being a fairly popular podcaster? The Big Finish audio stuff, which I haven't listened to, seems more likely to. The idea for the series (taking place immediately after THAT so-called 'finale'), would be the main characters having gone through rough patches:
  • Luke's civil partner has been a bad person, the relationship has been annulled and he has been laid off from his job at a secretive and uncaring employer (the friend's venting at how said employer has gone since 2012). He returns to 13BR, the only place that feels like home, reactivates Mr Smith, and resolves to rebuild his life
  • Clyde's film project has collapsed due to movie investors dropping out (the friend's venting out at the ten-a-penny nature of modern superhero films), and he comes back to the UK; the movie gets cancelled altogether
  • Rani is still living with her parents, and returns after covering that project rebuilding the Arctic.
Rani and Clyde meet up, find Luke living back at home. Initially hostile, they soon sympathise when he reveals what's happened. The three resolve to investigate a mysterious occurrence nearby, thwart some alien threat, and go back to the house.
Luke reveals that he's always fancied Clyde and Rani, and asks them to move in with him as his sidekicks/lovers, helping do what his mother did. They both accept, and that's the series premise. It picks up from there, the three live together, are in a relationship, with all the furniture, alien technology, cars, K-9 etc. put back exactly how they were. And they stop alien threats, just as SJ did.
Our feeling that the friend's plan mightn't be able to work now, is that apparently Rani and her new friends reactivate the supercomputer, and there's just issues like that. Just please note- I am not a screenwriter in the slightest and I have zero experience, I just enjoy worldbuilding and making screenplays for fun.
