I assume this is in Firefox, though? I'm not seeing the same results in Safari or Chrome. Firefox has never reacted very well to zooming on the edit box — though its problems heretofore have been with zooming out more than in.

Yep, you did say Firefox. Sorry. The thing about this new design is that the editing window has a fluid height. Firefox is apparently not liking that fluidity as much as other browsers. I will say, however, that on pages that have a lot of text, it's not quite so noticeable.

Orphaned pages

Hi! I have a couple of questions about orphaned pages. How many links need to go to an orphaned page for it to be no longer considered orphaned, that is, is one enough? I have no idea what you're talking about. You seem to be confusing me for someone else. Or at any rate, I don't remember marking something as a stub. Could you refresh my memory?

Past tense

I don't have a lot of time until November, but let me first apologise for not having finished the MOS rewrite yet. Had I done so, I would have already rectified this tense inconsistency thing, of which I was obviously aware.

Since I didn't, let me tell you where I was going with it.

I think there's a case to be made for always going with past tense, period. After all, we're not trying to provide general biographies of people. We're just interested in their career as it intersects with the DWU. Most of our articles on real people begin with something like "David Tennant played the Tenth Doctor", not "David Tennant plays the Tenth Doctor". When we go on to characterise their career, we're talking about their past roles, since our spoiler policy doesn't allow future tense. Any content about current roles should obviously be pre-emptively written in the simple past. Even natural-sounding lines like "Steven Moffat is the current executive producer of Doctor Who" can easily be past-tensified by the equally naturalistic, "Steven Moffat assumed the executive producership of Doctor Who in 2009."

It helps future proof articles if they're all, consistently, written in the past tense. Otherwise, you end up with the annoying chore of having to go back and rewrite articles once the subject is no longer currently working in the DWU, once the fact no longer is true, or once someone feels that a "sufficient" amount of time has passed to classify a new story a "past" story.

I've increasingly come to believe that T:POV doesn't really work as a rationale for tenses. T:POV is a legacy of founding admins' love of Memory Alpha, where they basically say the same thing: "We're all fictional archivists living at the end of the universe looking back on the fictional universe that we cover". That construct is very hard for new people to grasp. Indeed, Memory Alpha administrators like Sulfur have to periodically fend off challenges to that rule. They've actually been far less successful at getting their articles to be in past tense, which can be seen by editing almost any in-universe article. They have to fight back people who argue that some things are "universal concepts" which would be true even of these hypothetical, end-of-the-universe archivists. The vocal opposition at MA says things like, "Even archivists at the end of the universe would be living in a universe so therefore the article about 'universe' should be written in present tense because it's a constant." Therefore, current arguments by admin like Sulfur have taken to admiring our harder stance on the matter, which just says, "past tense, period."

I therefore think it's probably wiser to completely cut the ties with the MA position altogether and delete T:POV. Writing in past tense isn't a matter of perspective. It's just a choice. It's better to just say "use past tense cause that's our stylistic choice" and then demonstrate why using past tense just saves time in the long run. In much the same way that T:SPELL is just us picking a form of English to use here, we can and should simply choose a tense and stick with it. I honestly can't think of a case where using past tense would be at all awkward, even for living people. Conversely, every use of present tense immediately dates our writing.

Tense Trouble

Hi. I just have a question about the usage of past/present tense. If I understand the rules properly, all articles should be placed in the past tense, such as story plots and character bios, etc, though excluding articles on real life subjects such as actors, directors, etc. My question is, why shouldn't the intros to articles on stories (episodes, novels, comic books, etc) use the present tense, since they've covering a real-life aspect of the story? I'm asking this mainly because my edits to change the tense of some of the CON episodes from past to present were almost entirely reverted by you (along with a minor grammar fix, for some reason) without a message to me or even a line in the edit summary explaining exactly why I shouldn't change the tense. I mean, I had changed the tense of a couple of articles before and even pointed out I was changing the tense in the edit summary, and Tardis:Point of view seems to say that the present tense should be used for stories instead of the past tense. If present tense should just never be used, I'd just like an explanation as to why.

Vandalism

Looking for a mod to help stop the vandalism of the following page: List of BBC DVD releases. A mod locked out unregistered editor for a two week period a few months ago and that sent the vandals away, but now that they've realised the lockout is gone they are back to ruining the page with nonsense. Infobox at the Doctor

I know you were largely opposed to the idea of there being rotating images at the Doctor's infobox. It's sometimes hard to imagine what any final product will look like based merely on description. Now that I've finally crossed that one off my to-do list, I hope you'll find that's relatively elegant and harmonious with the way our infoboxes normally look.

Tenses, perspectives, and the like

In line with our earlier discussion, I've now moved all the POV stuff out of T:MOS and into its own short chain of articles, branching from T:POV. As you'll notice, I've kept it to a bare minimum. It seems pretty clear to me, and I'm not detecting any particular inconsistencies between T:POV, T:IU and T:OOU. I've softened my stance on OOU articles from what I said, above. Now I've gone for strongly recommending past tense, but noting that there might be times to use present tense. In particular, I've recommended using present tense in BTS sections, so as to draw contrast with the past tense of the IU part of the article. Lemme know what you think.

A positive list of sources

Yes, we do have such a list. If you'll recall, when I was first re-writing canon policy — back in the days when we were still clinging to that dirty five-letter word — you made a similar request of me. The concept of a positive list of sources has therefore been a part of the rewrite process ever since. There's a link to it within the highlight box at Tardis:Valid sources#Stories that have been specifically disallowed. The more direct link is Tardis:Valid sources/Detailed list.

That said, the list does need a bit of cleanup, post prefix restructuing, as it was based on using the old prefixes. So these all got converted to the new prefixes, which means the list doesn't say much. I'll be cleaning that up now ...

New forum

I wasn't trying to make a major change without consultation. Honest! I tried playing around with the new forum feature on two other wikis and I soon realised I was going have to do some serious tinkering to get it up to speed before we could even evaluate it fairly.

I attended the webinar on this one, and have been a part of discussions at w:c:avatar and I honestly think that — on balance — you're going to love how this improves our communication. I'll give further updates as I craft this thing into place.

The thing at the bottom of every page

Yeah. If you're wondering about this thing that (currently) says "feature under development", well, Wikia are currently insisting that it's a TOU violation to remove it, as I had originally done. I'm kinda holding off styling it too much, because it's catching a lot of flack from other Wikians, and Staff seem happy to engage with us for the time being. It might well disappear so I don't want to waste a lot of time on it, given how much else there is to do with these new forums.

Oh, yeah, I've not explained what it does :) It's meant to create a link between an article and discussions in the forum. You can see it in better action at the bottom of Blood of the Cybermen (video game). (One) problem is, of course, that very, very few pages (<.01% of pages on a big wiki like this) will actually have anything at the bottom of the page. Plenty of discussion about it over at the CC blog page about the new forums.

Hello, Tangerineduel. I am not sure how all this works, to be honest. I am the author of the Señor 105 novella 'By The Time I Get To Venus' - I'm not particularly concerned whether the book is included in this wiki or not, but I am concerned by your accusation that Paul Hinder (aka 'Paul Leonard' in Doctor Who fiction circles) had not granted permission for the use of his Venus in the story. I can assure you he most certainly did and I would never have included his concepts had he not been happy for me to do so. This was a paid gig, not a work of 'fan-fic'. You should read it. I'm proud of it. Please retract the accusation. Paul Hinder's blessing is verifiable. It might be an idea for you to do so, as for some reason, you don't seem believe the acknowledgements in the book or on the Manleigh website. Cheers. BB X

Señor Dilemma

I don't see what's so offensive about the current statement, because you're stressing that it's your opinion and that you personally can't find evidence of a connection. There might be one — but you can't find it. You haven't libelled anyone here, as far as I can see.

But if you wanted to make it clear, you could go back to the thread — since you're an admin, you can edit it — and just say that you've been contacted by someone who may be the author, and that they claim they had permission from Paul Leonard to use the characters. Then you could state that this doesn't really help us in the inclusion debate, because an anonymous post on a talk page doesn't prove that the work meets our standards for inclusion.

If you wanted to be extra cautious, I suppose you could also clarify that you weren't actually saying that it was fan fiction, just that it felt like fan fiction. The whole point here is that the lack of evidence is part of what's causing the inclusion debate in the first place.

Latest stuff from CC

I just wanted to keep you apprised of some things that caught my eye at Community Central.

First there's the simply amazing case of Juneran, the user with an avatar that Wikia refuses to ban. Take a look at it and community:thread:465965. I think it might be important to note how what a lot of people would think of as obviously offensive is not a TOU violation.

Then you'll probably wanna keep up with this blog post because it's the first announcement of the new Wikia App for iPad. You're the one of us who has an iPad (unless Santa is unexpectedly nice this year), so you'll probably have to check up on our content as this app goes live early next year. Of course, there'll probably be a way to use the app on a desktop Mac, but still, you'll be able to see it "natively".

It means that we're going to have to consider articles in four different formats now: Monobook, Wikia, Wikiamobile and WikiaApp. I have no idea what that means, specifically, because I don't have WikiaApp in front of me. But I'm sure this means that we have to do something about standardising our content in some way.

Not aware of any way to change the 10-thread limit. I'm just archiving more aggressively, since archiving is one hell of a lot easier than in the old forums. However, I would strongly urge you to send in a Special:Contact on the issue, since they're actively seeking feedback at the moment. I probably do at least one email a day on Special:Forum issues, and they're always really nice about it. We're totally beta testers on this thing.

As far as the Acer4666 thing, yeah, that's a total Wikia-wide bug that's happening in source mode to people who normally choose to edit in widescreen. If you collapse to "normal" width, you can then fully see the text of locked pages. It's because of the way they've defined the modules, and the way they're accomplishing the blanking effect.

Just running through category:proposed deletions and discovered that you'd just left {{merge}} templates at Meanwhile in the TARDIS 1 (TV story) and Meanwhile in the TARDIS 2 (TV story). There's no doubt this needs to be done. Was there some reason you left the tags instead of just doing the merge? (Not being snarky; just seemed odd and possibly meaningful behaviour.)

Details of which you should be aware

I've changed all the welcome messages such that they no longer say what article the editor first worked on. This is because all these IP editors, and not a few <50 edit registered editors, were clogging the Special:WantedPages list after the article they edited was deleted. It was becoming more than a little tedious having to go back and edit people's welcome messages just to ensure there was no WantedPages detritus. All welcome templates and MediaWiki messages have been changed to excise this link. The bot will therefore be working overtime over Christmas removing every single user's "first edit". Of course, the first edit is still easily viewable from their welcome message, in that there's a convenient link to their contributions history right there.

The "Discontinuity Project" is proving a bit of a bitch, largely because people had sometimes forgotten to categorise the old Forum version of the page. This has meant an additional step or two with the bot, and it has meant that the literal discontinuity index wasn't actually a complete index of all the threads we had available. I've created a discontinuity preload which is now availalble from the drop down menu on the editing window which hopefully will alleviate the non-categorisation issue as we move forward. Happily, the DW TV discontinuity area is now fully open for tomorrow's episode, with all threads restored to the index listing. Other parts of the discontinuity index are gradually being reopened as they're completed.

Their agenda is mostly to do with correcting problems in the way the new Wall Forum looks in Mobile. Don't delete videos just cause they're "unused"

Videos don't obey the expected rules of file usage. If you go to cricket bat, you'll see a video in the right rail. This video, File:Coming to terms with regeneration - Doctor Who Castrovalva - BBC is actually on cricket bat, regeneration and Fifth Doctor. But being in the right rail doesn't "count" towards the file usage stat, so you get this false positive "no pages link to this image" message.

For this reason, I'd advise that you not delete videos on the basis of the "file usage" stat. You should pretty much assume that every video uploaded is being used somehow, even if it's not readily apparent how.

OverAnalyser cleanup

I really need your help cleaning up after user:OverAnalyser's many, many infractions of T:NO RW, for which he or she is again blocked. He or she had a penchant for creating articles, as you know, that went one step too far. Cabin steward (The Chase) is a good example. He's gone far beyond anything in The Chase, relying far too heavily on real life to write the article, extrapolating that since the real life cabin steward on the Mary Celeste was named "Edward William Head", so must be the DWU cabin steward.

One big issue with The Chase stuff that needs checking is whether "Flight Through Eternity" is at any point identified as taking place on 25 November 1872, or if OverAnalyser was simply supplying the real life date.

If you could comb his contributions list, I'd be grateful. I've looked through the latest 100 or so, but once I started hitting The Chase-related stuff and the various entries for the Mary Celeste crew, I kinda knew I was getting too far away from the tasks I need to be focussed on at the moment. I think I've left behind generally solid edit summaries so you should see notes like "reverting OverAnalyser" or "upholding T:NO RW" where I've already been.

OA claims:

So, if accurate, that means he — and I think we can say he based on his comments to me — didn't see any of our warnings befpre 28 December 2012. He thought that the Hypercube message alert was just a Community-corner message alert, and didn't feel it applied to him enough to be bothered clicking the link. So up until the end of last year nothing we wrote to him was seen. Our communication to him begins only with User talk:OverAnalyser#Seriously, no real world information. As you can see, I really did try to understand and educate him. But when he again screwed with the Ringo Starr page, that was it for me. At that point, he no longer had an excuse not to have seen his previous ban, so it was clear he didn't care about T:NO RW.

Shame to lose this editor, in a way, because he seemed knowledgeable about the old series, and he was polite in discussions. But, as evidenced by his contribution history, he either never fully understood, or — more likely — just wasn't interested in following T:NO RW.

I tried to rollback everything I could at the time I banned him, because his edits were largely still the latest ones. But when I started pulling on the piñata that was The Chase, I began to encounter more and more articles that he originated or where there were intervening editors.

BF trailers

Nope. You're not overly worrying. I just screwed the pooch and failed to read the Terms and Conditions. I've written off to them for their opinion. That'll teach me for trying to do a little improvement project while waiting for Wikia's midweek code changes to settle down enough for me to burrow back into the CSS. Here's the text of the message:

Hi all :)

We've recently been doing another round of improvement of our Big Finish-related articles at tardis.wikia.com, and we've come to a question of legality that only you can resolve.

On the theory that it was fair use to use a thing intended to be an advertisement as an advertisement, we started putting your unedited official trailers for each audio play onto each play's page. See the bottom of the infobox at Phantasmagoria for an example. Then it was pointed out that the fourth provision of your website's terms of use could be construed to specifically prohibit this sort of thing.

For clarity, what we're doing is downloading your official trailers, converting them to .ogg (since MediaWiki software doesn't accept .mp3), uploading them without expurgation to the wikia.com servers, attaching this copyright warning, and then placing them on the relevant story page. Aside from the .ogg conversion, the only change we've made to the file is to slightly change the names so that they more precisely match the actual name of the play. Your naming convention is something like The-roof-of-the-world-XXX.mp3. We convert to The Roof of the World.ogg.

Is this a fair use of your materials, or have we crossed the line?

I'd kinda expect a response before the weekend, given statements on their website, but we should know by next week at least. Thanks for catchin' this. (Note that the original document was well-linked, but this quick copy and paste job didn't bring over those links.)

Doctor Who Magazine year pages

The DWM year pages need a bit of attention. 1990s-present seem to be organised around the "year of release", rather than year of cover date. This is a bit confusing since DWM have now switched back to simple month cover dates. Doctor Who Magazine/2012, for instance, starts with DWM 443 — the February 2012 issue — and ends with DWM 455, the January 2013 issue. What's usually observed in thinking about the dates of a magazine are its cover dates, not the dates it was available to the public.

Also, I know for a fact we have no idea what the release dates are for the monthly issue of the 1980s. So those year pages are done by cover dates, whereas the more modern years are done by release date. Highly confusing.

Yeah I was never happy with the "pulled from the newsstands" bit. I did that at the time to emphasise to other users that we'd gotten it wrong and needed to adjust things. That's only around for sorta the 1990s-mid-2000s. Unfortunately no one took the hint. The phraseology that's been at Template:DWM issue/preload for a while now has been what you'll find at, say, DWM 457. It almost certainly has the neutrality you're looking for.

But still people haven't quite grasped the concept of what a "cover date" is, so I've had to go back and painstakingly correct things, issue by issue. There is, alas, no bot run for this since it involves replacing factually incorrect material. Hopefully people will get it, but I dunno. Feels like I've been trying intermittently for years to get the DWM issues factually correct about their cover dates. Oh wait, I have. I'm afraid it's just gonna take concentrated effort to go through all 457 issues. Manually.

A few days ago, my day counter rolled back to 1, despite the fact that I've been contributing for many days in a row (You can check my user contributions if you don't believe me). 1. What's "this side?"
2. "Could not be equalled?" — What does that mean? It's smaller? Bigger? Does it have nothing to do with size? This makes zero sense to me.

As per, T:DAB, I'm planning on moving Clara Oswald to Clara Oswald (The Snowmen), and making Clara Oswin Oswald (with Clara Oswald as a redirect) into a dab page, linking to all the different Claras. Considering that they're popular pages, however, I'd rather it if an admin would do it to avoid riots. Could you either do this yourself, or at least approve of it? Otherwise, I'll have no choice but to just do it on my own.

I think the Master was a special case where merging would have produced a frankly useless page history. In general, the way you propose to merge pages is definitely the way we should do it. Fire at will.  :)

I've noticed something...odd

So daylight saving time has begun and so the clocks have gone forward. But when you do the four tildes to signature thingy it displays the time as an hour before the actual time. Bit weird, thought I'd mention it. And here's an example. it's 10:22am where I am, and it comes up as 9:22am (Probably different to you, you might be in a different time zone, I don't know). To address your question and the questions that Czechout brought up:

I'm not a very technically minded person. I've had a computer since the 90s and only recently found the mechanism for taking a screen shot. That's why I haven't uploaded any image files to the wiki. I'd like to upload pictures from some of my DVDs, once I get a chance to learn the process.

Czechout mentioned that I have no edits in the template namespace. The simple reason for that is that I don't know how. Specifically I haven't come across a need to use or create a template in my editing so far.

He also mentioned the category namespace. I've created a few categories, but for the most part I've been able to find existing categories that suit my needs.

I've got very little patience for merging things, but you're an old hand at it. Any chance that I can get you to do a non-controversial merge of ray gun → energy weapon, with energy weapon being the "survivor" but ray gun redirecting to energy weapon? There's no meaningful distinction between the two, so far as I can see. Thanks :)

Speediness

I've got no intent to do any other kind of "speedy administrative action" thingy, like speedy merge or speedy delete, which is why T:SPEEDY leads only to Tardis:Speedy renames. I've always seen mergers and deletions as totally different beasts to simple renames (moves), even if renaming does frequently involve deletion of the original page name, and is very technically a merge.

I think this is a little better than a category because it collects information about the state of links. It requires the user to assert that they have checked on the links and either done something about them or not. If someone has already performed the link moves, and they don't need the bot, then any admin can assist them. So this tool will hopefully allow me to focus on only those moves where the bot is specifically needed.

It'll also, I think, differentiate between those renames that require discussion — which is not that many, really — and those that don't.

Companion Status?

I hope this is the right place to ask, because I have a quick question I was hoping you might be able to help answer. I was wondering what makes Madame Vastra a companion, but not Jenny Flint? They've both been in exactly the same media. John Riddell, Nefertiti, Sarah Jane and Jo Grant (due to the SJA Death of the Doctor), and Christina de Souza due to her comic strip reappearance are all labeled as Eleventh Doctor companions because of one-off appearances with that specific incarnation. A Good Man Goes to War and Dinosaurs on a Spaceship seem similar situations, where the Doctor assembles a group of companions in both, so it seems strange that Jenny, a key character who ends up reappearing, isn't a companion, while the others are. There's a debate on Jenny's talk page about this where OS25 claimed he was going to remove characters like Vastra and Riddell from the Eleventh Doctor companion category, but they're either still there or were re-added, so I was wondering if you could weigh-in on that and explain where the line is drawn? Sam(antha) Jones

Hi Tangerineduel, we need your advice. I see from the history of the Samantha Jones page that you have added a lot of information there, and therefore must be quite familiar with the character. The advice I actually need isn't for this wiki, but for the Doctor Who Answers wiki, a partner wiki to this one, where we have two categories for this character, one titled Sam Jones and the other, Samantha Jones, and they need to be combined into one category. However, both me and the user who brought this duplication to my attention don't know anything about this character other than what is here on the Data Core. What we need to know, in short, is what version of the name is the character most known as, Sam or Samantha, so we can give the category the name most likely to be searched for by users searching for questions on the subject of her. As this fiftieth anniversary year comes to a close, we here at Tardis just want to thank you for being a part of our community — even if you haven't edited here in a while. If you have edited with us this year, then thanks for all your hard work.

This year has seen an impressive amount of growth. We've added about 11,000 pages this year, which is frankly incredible for a wiki this big. November was predictably one of the busiest months we've ever had: over 500 unique editors pitched in. It was the highest number of editors in wiki history for a year in which only one programme in the DWU was active. And our viewing stats have been through the roof. We've averaged well over 2 million page views each week for the last two months, with some weeks seeing over 4 million views!

We've received an unprecedented level of support from Wikia Staff, resulting in all sorts of new goodies and productive new relationships. And we've recently decided to lift almost every block we've ever made so as to allow most everyone a second chance to be part of our community.

2014 promises to build on this year's foundations, especially since we've got a full, unbroken series coming up — something that hasn't happened since 2011. We hope you'll stick with us — or return to the Tardis — so that you can be a part of the fun!
