Victor Kennedy's basic surveillance and espionage strategy
Victor Kennedy's basic surveillance and espionage strategy (PROSE: The Time Traveller's Almanac) was covered in his classes to LINDA and acted on by the members as homework.
- Step 1: Engage your target. Find some excuse to start a conversation.
- Step 2: Without provoking suspicion, get on first name terms with the target.
- Step 3: Ingratiate yourself with a joke or some humourous device.
- Step 4: Find some subtle way to integrate yourself into the target's household.
- Step 5: Infiltration.
Upon finding Jackie Tyler at the Wash Inn, Elton Pope achieved steps 1 to 4 thanks to Jackie herself. Jackie first engaged Elton by asking him for a quid in exchange for two fifties, then told him her name, laughed at the absurdity of her flashing a stranger her knickers and finally asking if he could fix her washing machine at home, leading to him regularly visiting her to work. Colin Skinner was amazed that Elton achieved steps 1 to 4 in the precise order, with Elton claiming that he had to work very hard. Victor assigned homework concerning Step 5 for the week's homework, ordering a full plan of attack from each member. Ultimately, much to Victor's fury, Elton failed Step 5 when Jackie found a photograph of his daughter in his coat, with Elton coming to understand that what he did was wrong in any case.
