What the Future Holds was the twenty-second and final short story in Doctor Who The Official Annual 2022. While the story, which also serves as a conclusion to the annual as a whole, does contain a single sliver of a narrative element, it serves primarily as a fourth wall-breaking introduction to the page's activity item: a fill-in-the-blanks short story in which the reader is invited to come up with their own idea of what might happen if they met the Doctor.

In a psychic paper note, the Doctor talks about how it's always sad when a chapter of her life ends, and that Yaz and her will miss Graham and Ryan loads, before expressing her belief that the TARDIS won't be quiet for long, pondering that maybe the reader will join her: she ends by asking the reader what they think might happen if they did…
