Publisher's summary[[edit] | [edit source]]

Secretary Pym has never left the Eternity Club. This will never do. Bernice Summerfield drags him on an expedition. What could possibly go wrong?

Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]

Secretary Pym closes the Eternity Club's observatory due to the solar array being overused and Grizella, Altazar and Geren protest, with the former revealing what Benny had told her in confidence: that Pym has never left the asteroid. The three club members agree that somebody with no interest in adventure should not be giving orders, so Benny reprograms the clockwork butlers to kidnap him so that she might get him off of the asteroid for an adventure and flies him to a planet where he faints at the sight of the outdoors. When he becomes conscious again, he blames the atmosphere differential and is keen to get to work on moving things and rewinding the shuttle's clockwork engines, but Benny informs him that the butlers have everything in hand and tells him to relax by the sea. Although confused by the sea, he suggests a walk along the beach.

Benny and Pym find a ruined temple which Benny deduces was blown up and then have a picnic. A while later, Pym reveals that he has tasked the clockwork droids with rebuilding the temple in ignorance of archaeology, which frustrates and upsets Benny. In an attempt to satiate Benny, he has the butlers collect dust. They watch a sunset and notice that the temple has started glowing thanks to the butlers having restored the wiring for the solar batteries, but it starts to transform and open a portal through which a monstrous creature from another universe begins to emerge. It vanishes and Benny and Pym decide to head back to the shuttle in the dark, unaware of whether the creature had fully emerged or returned back through the portal.

The pair become confused and realise that they have lost time. A butler finds them and attempts to lead them back to the shuttle, but Benny believes that the creature has moved between the two of them and entered the butler, which they run from until they realise the danger that the creature could pose if it leaves the planet. At the shuttle, the butler explains that the universe will have to be closed down to stop the threat posed by the Death, which came through the portal long ago. Pym hits it with a flask of tea and the other butlers prepare to return to the Eternity Club with him and Benny, suggesting that the other members might be able to assist and revealing that they have all been infiltrated. The pair manage to get out of the shuttle and flee with the launch key.

As they run away, Benny starts to realise a connection between the temple, 312 and the Oldest and that the temple will be reopening. Pym feels that he belongs in the temple and lures the butlers to him. The temple explodes and the creature takes the butlers back with it to its own dimension whilst Benny and Pym return to the Eternity Club, where Benny confronts the Oldest about her identity and 312's construction of the gateway using rock from Parroon. The Nurse puts a stop to the conversation, however, and Benny informs Pym that she believes that the club has been taken over by somebody who is not meant to be in this universe: the Master.
