Virginia was an American and Confederate state. Its capital, Richmond, was also the capital of the Confederacy, and the Civil War residency of Jefferson Davis, the Confederate president. Will Johnson once wrote to his lover, Claire Bartlett, of an assassination attempt in Richmond upon Abraham Lincoln that was thwarted by the Fifth Doctor, and how he himself had become Lincoln's bodyguard in the aftermath.

Virginia was also home to the town of Buckley, an agrarian community where Peri Brown spent some time with Erimem. There, the dark-skinned Egyptian princess encountered some of the racism inherent in the state, and had to pretend to be a slave. (PROSE: Blood and Hope)
