Before editing this page, please read T:RUMOUR and T:OOU SRC. Fan sites, videos and blogs are not valid sources for this article. Also cast and crew announcements need to be handled in a particular way.

Please also remember to directly quote people, or to exactly characterise their statements. Do not say that someone said something when they really didn't. Work from original quotesnot a paraphrasing of them. When it comes to anything Russell T Davies, Jane Tranter, Julie Gardner, another exec, or any major star of the show says, give their exact quote only. Remember, a part of the production team's job is to tell the truth, but only very narrowly. So this page should contain only what they exactly say.

Series 14 is an upcoming series of Doctor Who produced by BBC in collaboration with Bad Wolf.[1] It entered a new era of the show as former Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer Russell T Davies made his return to the position thirteen years after having left the position following the 2010 New Year Special The End of Time[2] at the time with David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor.

Overview

Return of a Showrunner

On 29 July 2021 the BBC, following Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall’s announced departure, noted "We will announce plans for the new generation of Doctor Who in due course – watch this space!".[3]

The new series, and Davies himself, was first teased by the Piers Wenger as a change that would be "radical" on 25 August.[4]

It was noted in a big reveal by the BBC on 24 September 2021 that Russell T. Davies would make his explosive return in the 60th anniversary special in 2023 and then in "series beyond",[2] a reveal that Davies first hinted at on that same date earlier in the day as “News incoming 3.15pm” on his Instagram along with artwork of his forehead in front of Gallifrey.[5] Like the preceeding Series 13[6] the series was announced as happening before the preceeding series had began broadcasting.

Commenting on his return, Davies said:

I’m beyond excited to be back on my favourite show. But we’re time-travelling too fast, there’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker's brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm — I’m still a viewer for now.Russell T Davies [src]

Chibnall himself added:

It’s monumentally exciting and fitting that Doctor Who’s 60th anniversary will see one of Britain’s screenwriting diamonds return home. Russell built the baton that is about to be handed back to him. Doctor Who, the BBC, the screen industry in Wales — and let’s be honest everyone in the whole world — have so many reasons to be Very Excited Indeed about what lies aheadChris Chibnall [src]

Announcements

In May 2017, it was announced that due to the terms of a deal between BBC Worldwide and SMG Pictures in China, the company has first right of refusal on the purchase for the Chinese market of past and future series and spin-offs of the programme.[7][8]

In October 2019, it was revealed that due to the show heading to HBO Max, the network had struck a deal for additional series of the programme.[9]

Promotion

The very first bit of promotion for this series came on 24 September 2021 with the reveal that Russell T Davies would be leading the show from the 60th Anniversary special and into "series beyond".[2]

Rumours

  • Billie Piper could return as Rose Tyler at some point “if the circumstances and the story were right”.[10]
  • Matt Smith could return as the Doctor at some point "Yeah, if the timing was right, and after giving Jodie Whittaker a chance. I think we've got to give a few years to Miss Whittaker to get the TARDIS under her belt, as it were, and then yeah — one day". [11]
