Latest revision as of 20:35, 3 November 2024
Clarence and the Whispermen was a short produced exclusively for the Doctor Who: Series 7 Part 2 and Doctor Who: The Complete Seventh Series DVD and Blu-ray box sets. It was written by Steven Moffat and serves as a prequel to the events of The Name of the Doctor.
Synopsis[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Whisper Men approach Clarence DeMarco while in jail, producing the coordinates to Trenzalore which he must give to the 'reptile detective' so they would end up with the Doctor.
Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]
In a jail, the serial killer Clarence DeMarco shouts at whispering inhuman creatures beyond the bars, insisting they are not real and asking them to stop. The Whisper Men vanish, just to appear inside the guardhouse. They say they want the Doctor. Clarence doesn't understand. The Whisper Men project Gallifreyan symbols in the air, then forcibly impress them into his mind, along with their meaning and purpose; the instructions are to bring the message to the reptile detective. Questioned about it, the Whisper Men explain they are not human: they are the Intelligence, who knows everything. If Clarence will cooperate, he will be pardoned and he won't be hanged, he will live a good long life, except for troubled sleep. The man cries he wants to be left alone, while the creatures pass by him.
Cast[[edit] | [edit source]]
- Clarence DeMarco - Michael Jenn (uncredited)
- Whisper Man - Paul Kasey (uncredited)
Crew[[edit] | [edit source]]
- Writer - Steven Moffat
- Director - Stephen Woolfenden (uncredited)
Worldbuilding[[edit] | [edit source]]
- The Whisper Men say that they are not men and refer to themselves as "the Intelligence".
- The Whisper Men hint at Vastra as the "reptile detective".
Story notes[[edit] | [edit source]]
- This story is a prequel to The Name of the Doctor and is the second one to the episode, the first being She Said, He Said: A Prequel.
Filming location[[edit] | [edit source]]

Production errors[[edit] | [edit source]]
- The spelling of "Whispermen" in the title appears to be a production error in that it contradicts the end credits of The Name of the Doctor as well as the BBC One programme listings for Name, both of which render the name "Whisper Men".
Continuity[[edit] | [edit source]]
- The Whisper Men show the coordinates to Trenzalore in Gallifreyan symbols, which the Paternoster Gang will show to River Song and Clara Oswald during TV: The Name of the Doctor, after Vastra receives the coordinates from Clarence.
