Obverse Books is a fiction imprint set up in 2008 by Stuart Douglas with the aim of providing more adult-oriented Doctor Who-related fiction, with initial emphasis on the character of Iris Wildthyme, created by Paul Magrs for his Phoenix Court series. Its first release, Iris Wildthyme and the Celestial Omnibus, was published in 2009.

In 2011, Obverse released the Faction Paradox anthology A Romance in Twelve Parts. Following this, it obtained the rights to publish Faction Paradox novels, beginning with 2013's Against Nature and The Brakespeare Voyage.

From 2011 to 2013, Obverse published the Obverse Quarterly, a subscription-based quarterly paperback series, with initial offerings including spin-off collections from Iris Wildthyme, vintage genre reprints, horror stories, and a collection of tales centred around Zenith, the albino Sexton Blake villain, with contributions from Michael Moorcock, Paul Magrs and George Mann. Two Quarterly releases were spun off into their own ranges: Señor 105 & the Elements of Danger, which started the novella series The Periodic Adventures of Señor 105; and Tales of the City, a Faction Paradox spin-off which started Obverse's The City of the Saved anthology series.

From 2012 to 2016, Obverse operated an ebook-only imprint called Manleigh Books, which published The Periodic Adventures of Señor 105.

Since early 2016, Obverse has published the The Black Archive, a monthly series of books examining individual Doctor Who stories. As of 2021, Obverse has released or announced 62 Black Archive books.

To celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2019, Obverse published Obverse Sextet, a series of six novellas which cross over its various ranges.
