The anthology spun off from the Doctor Who spin off Iris Wildthyme.

- The main characters originate from the Iris Wildthyme stories The Delightful Bag and The Irredeemable Love.
- The general concept is a pastiche, most obviously, of Sherlock Holmes; for example, "irregulars" and "casebook" are terms affiliated with — though not exclusive to — the Holmes stories.
