Liverpool was a city, located on the north-west coast (TV: The Lie of the Land) of England. (TV: The Categories of Life) North-east of Liverpool was Manchester. (TV: The Lie of the Land)

Inhabitants of Liverpool, such as Joseph Williamson, were referred to as "Liverpudlians", (TV: The Vanquishers) or alternatively as "Scouse" (TV: The Halloween Apocalypse, The Vanquishers) or "Scousers". (TV: Survivors of the Flux)

Liverpool was home to the Thirteenth Doctor's companion Dan Lewis, (TV: The Halloween Apocalypse) whilst the Seventh Doctor's companion Hex Schofield grew up there whilst under the care of his grandmother Hilda. (AUDIO: Signs and Wonders)

Culture

According to Dan Lewis, a proud Liverpudlian and "Official Scouse", Liverpool was defined by the writers, musicians and footballers which collectively formed its history. (TV: The Halloween Apocalypse)

Indeed, in terms of music, Liverpool was home to the Beatles. (TV: The Chase, PROSE: Time and Relative) Music by the group reached as far as the planet Necros, (TV: Revelation of the Daleks) and their songs were considered to be "classical music" by the 42nd century. (TV: 42) A statue of the group had been erected on Liverpool waterfront by 2021. (TV: The Vanquishers)

As for football, Liverpool was home to Liverpool F.C.. The football club represented the city at tournaments including the European Cup, and faced rivals including A.C. Milan (AUDIO: Something Inside) and F.C. Barcelona. (TV: The Halloween Apocalypse) The club had fans beyond the city of Liverpool, including Jonah Bevan who lived in the Welsh town of Penarth. The Tenth Doctor trusted Liverpool for its "magnificent workmanship". (TV: The Waters of Mars) Evidence of this workmanship was displayed by Liverpudlian workers under the employ of Joseph Williamson - a 19th century philanthropist. Williamson and his men built the Williamson Tunnels beneath the Edge Hill area of Liverpool. (TV: The Halloween Apocalypse, The Vanquishers) The tunnels were later excavated and became a tourist attraction by 2021. (TV: Survivors of the Flux)

Despite this, the city was not without its problems. Trevor Winstone frowned upon Liverpool as a place of "terrible housing, mass unemployment and rampant crime". He blamed the government for this. (PROSE: The Hollow Men) Some residents struggled to afford food, and so visited their local food banks in order to get by. (TV: The Halloween Apocalypse)

Liverpool was approximate to an area known as Merseyside. Local water came from Garside reservoir. (PROSE: The Hollow Men)

The city had a waterfront, where the Museum of Liverpool was located. The district of Anfield was also located in the city; this was the location of Dan Lewis' house at 37 Granger Street, and was also home to the stadium of Liverpool F.C.. Beyond Granger Street, other streets in the city included Jenning Street and Lark Lane. (TV: The Halloween Apocalypse)

Liverpool had its own docks, which were adjacent to the Mersey. The Pier Head was also located nearby. (TV: War of the Sontarans)

History

19th century

In 1820, Joseph Williamson oversaw the construction of the Williamson Tunnels. (TV: The Halloween Apocalypse)

20th century

On 22 November 1948, Francis Cleary was born in Liverpool to Siobhan Cleary. (PROSE: Who Killed Kennedy)

In 1963, the Tenth Doctor took Martha Jones to a performance by The Beatles in Liverpool. (COMIC: Signs of Life)

The First Doctor, Steven Taylor and Sara Kingdom briefly visited Liverpool on 25 December 1965. (TV: The Dalek's Master Plan) Sara was under the impression that Liverpool was a planet. (AUDIO: The Anachronauts)

21st century

The Seventh Doctor visited Liverpool in the early 21st century and investigated chemicals being released into the city's water supply. (PROSE: The Hollow Men)

In 2005, Liverpool's football club, led by Steven Gerrard, won the European Cup for the fifth time in its history when they triumphed over A.C. Milan in the final despite being 3-0 down at half time, having scored three goals in the second half before going on to win the match. This win was recounted by the Eighth Doctor who used it to inspire himself and his companions to overcome the brain-worm and escape the Cube. (AUDIO: Something Inside)

During the ghost shift craze of 2007, ghosts, actually Cybermen from Pete's World, were forecast as appearing in Liverpool. (TV: Army of Ghosts)

During Miracle Day in 2011, an overflow camp was set up in or around Liverpool. (TV: The Categories of Life)

Riots occurred in the city in 2020. (AUDIO: Afterlife)

On New Year's Day, 2021, Dan Lewis' friend read Dan his horoscope. (TV: Welcome to the TARDIS...) He worked there as a food bank volunteer and, on Halloween night of the same year, he was captured by Karvanista to save him from the Flux. He was subsequently saved by the Thirteenth Doctor and Yasmin Khan. (TV: The Halloween Apocalypse)

In December 2021, the Sontarans' invasions plans was defeated by the Thirteenth Doctor and her companions. (TV: War of the Sontarans, The Vanquishers) Liverpool would later be defined as "the Sontaran base on Earth" in a list of words relating to the Thirteenth Doctor's past which had been jumbled by the Flux. Bowie Base One's bulkheads were created in Liverpool in the 2050s. (TV: The Waters of Mars)

Later history

At some point in the future relative to 1965, Liverpool became host to The Beatles' Memorial Theatre, which Vicki Pallister once visited. (TV: The Chase)

Though it's possible that a real world location doesn't exist in the same geographic space in the Doctor Who universe, such cases are few and far between. Thus, the map to the right is probably a good indicator of the DWU location of Liverpool.

County borders

Historically, the city of Liverpool was located in the county of Lancashire. Following a reform of county boundaries in 1974, Liverpool became part of Merseyside.

Dan Lewis' apparent dislike for Leeds, and nearby Sheffield, in The Halloween Apocalypse is most likely banter, stemming from the historic rivalry between Lancashire and Yorkshire. Dan is a born Liverpudlian and, if Dan's age reflects that of John Bishop, would have born in Liverpool when the city was part of Lancashire; both Leeds and Sheffield are typical Yorkshire cities.

Other facts

• Doctor Who actors Tom Baker, Paul McGann, Maureen O'Brien, Elisabeth Sladen and John Bishop were all born in Liverpool.
• Liverpool was the setting for a 1996 Vodafone advertisement which features one of Jon Pertwee's final performances. It follows an American government agent (played by Kyle MacLachlan) who travels to Liverpool to prevent the construction of a time machine. He leaves after determining that the device was just a karaoke machine, never realising that a genuine alien time traveller, the Third Doctor, was coincidentally working two doors down.
• Liverpool is home to the World Museum where the Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder exhibition was held.
