| ==300Mya==
| | Oh, do they? OK, won't interfere then.) |
| In [[The Hungry Earth]], at 33:37, the Doctor says, "You're 300 million years outside your comfort zone."
| |
|
| |
|
| 300Mya is around the start of the Permian period (Cisuralian age, Asselian epoch, to be specific). It was during this era that the proto-reptiles split into two lines--pelycosaurs and sauropsids. The pelycosaurs were the ancestors of therapsids (mammal-like reptiles), mammals, and other synapsids. The sauropsids were the ancestors of the birds, most familiar dinosaurs, and modern reptiles.
| | ==Citation needed== |
| | The <nowiki>{{fact}}</nowiki> present in the lead demands a source for what I assume is the co-existence of Silurians and Sea Devils. However, were I to put ''Warriors of the Deep'', this would immediately appear to be the source for all those alternative names, when it isn't. Are we to simply put all the necessary sources in the lead? I think this would be best, but perhaps in groups so an not to disrupt the flow. I know it's not convention to source leads, but I certainly think it should be. Hopefully someone can see through all the superflous text here, as I appear to have hidden my own question.--{{User:Skittles the hog/sig}} 22:08, September 14, 2012 (UTC) |
|
| |
|
| Anyway, pelycosaurs are clearly still reptilian, and probably cold-blooded, but much more mammal-like in other ways than the sauropsids. And they ruled the planet for most of the next 50M years (until the P-Tr extinction wiped most of them out and the sauropsids took over, until the K-T extinction, aka the Adric extinction, 185 million years later, when synapsids took back over, in the form of mammals).
| | :I think the citation is required for the fact that the Silurians are from the Silurian period, which is contradicted by most of the other sources and mentioned in the Behind the Scenes section. I'm just going to remove that bit.-<[[User:Azes13|Azes13]] [[User talk:Azes13|<span title="Talk to me">☎</span>]] 03:49, September 15, 2012 (UTC) |

| So, the Silurians could be early pelycosaurs, who evolved around 300Mya. Or they could be Carboniferous-era early reptiles who went into hibernation at the start of the Permian, maybe with different groups of them awakening at various different times in the future as a means of escaping the multiple extinction events.

|
| I'm not a liar, Skittles, only '''five''' Silurians have been seen without their masks so far, and those are: [[Alaya]], [[Restac]], [[Malokeh]], [[Eldane]] and [[Vastra]]. All the others have got their masks on. Whilst with Sontarans, we've seen quite a lot more than that. It's not covering their faces, it's adding a concept.
| | It's stated in ''The Lost Dimension'' that Vastra's subspecies is the "Scholar class" while the Pertwee era Silurians are the "Warrior class". I understand that "Early" is also a used term in the literature, but considering that the Silurians met by the Third and Fifth Doctors respectively are essentially Warrior class, and the Silurians we see during and after the Eleventh Doctor era are "Scholar class", should we rename the gallery tabs from Eary, Middle and Late, seeing as Early and Middle are the same subspecies. I get that we want to show all of their iterations, but it's best to be accurate. |

These are two different branches. And I'm not copying any user, but the old Silurian is just far too dark. Now how about this image?

| :At no point has Skittles made a personal attack against you. We will not just be using an image of the new Silurians. They fall into the same category as the Cybermen. They have different types of Cybermen just as Silurians have different branches. We need to the difference between them as they are major differences between them (the third eye for instance). Not to have a split image is like having an single photo of the Master of his main page.

| | |
| :I'm struggling to understand why exactly you always want a new series image. Not all old series images are dark, so that is never an excuse. The old series images have as much right to be used as the new series one have.
| |
| | |
| :Just to note: The Silurians need to have a split image. They two different branches which the page covers are exactly that: different! We need to show both different branches that the pages covers, hence the reason the split image is the best.

| :Lastly, I will restore the image that you suggested above, since someone deleted it and it is being used in this discussion. [[User:Mini-mitch|Mini-mitch]]\[[User talk:Mini-mitch|talk]] 11:11, July 8, 2011 (UTC)

Just wondering - why does it say that Silurian's red thingy in the forehead is an eye? For me it's more like an augmentation of sorts, they're technologically advanced after all...– The preceding unsigned comment was added by 128.73.22.123 (talk).
- Because they call it an eye, so it must be an eye. -<Azes13 ☎ 13:27, August 8, 2012 (UTC)
Oh, do they? OK, won't interfere then.)
The {{fact}} present in the lead demands a source for what I assume is the co-existence of Silurians and Sea Devils. However, were I to put Warriors of the Deep, this would immediately appear to be the source for all those alternative names, when it isn't. Are we to simply put all the necessary sources in the lead? I think this would be best, but perhaps in groups so an not to disrupt the flow. I know it's not convention to source leads, but I certainly think it should be. Hopefully someone can see through all the superflous text here, as I appear to have hidden my own question.--Skittles the hog - talk 22:08, September 14, 2012 (UTC)
- I think the citation is required for the fact that the Silurians are from the Silurian period, which is contradicted by most of the other sources and mentioned in the Behind the Scenes section. I'm just going to remove that bit.-<Azes13 ☎ 03:49, September 15, 2012 (UTC)
- Sorry if that wasn't clear. The Fact tag I added was for the "lived during the Silurian" rather than "co-existed with Sea Devils". -- Tybort (talk page) 10:21, September 15, 2012 (UTC)
Um hi could everyone just sign there comments? just hold shift and push the key wright below the esc key four times thank you.Homo reptilia ☎ 18:54, December 31, 2012 (UTC)
Would the armies of Silurians using weapons post-2010 contradict what this page says about them usually not being armed? Or should this be a "Wenley vs. Wales" distinction? -- Tybort (talk page) 22:57, October 2, 2012 (UTC)
When Alaya is killed with a stun gun, I thought it was odd that she died from something so simple. Are the Silurians really susceptible to electricity? – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kurai the Tsukikage (talk • contribs) .
Was it an aquatic silurian or a land living one?Homo reptilia ☎ 18:56, December 31, 2012 (UTC)
Land living, she's from the new episodes. She's the new one in the main picture on the Silurian page.
oh yeah now I remember her. Mabye there was a more powerful setting on the stun gun or mabye since she lived underground she had water on her and was electrocuted.Homo reptilia ☎ 22:36, December 31, 2012 (UTC)
- You do know that you can kill a human with a stun gun, right? It's not that much of a stretch to assume you could kill a Silurian the same way. -<Azes13 ☎ 04:08, January 1, 2013 (UTC)
Yes, I know humans can also die from stun guns. However, I figured it would have been on setting that wouldn't be strong enough to kill her which led me to believe they may be more susceptible.
Well the lady was threatening her since her father was poisoned and her husband an her son had been kidnapped, so she seemed pretty serious to me.Homo reptilia ☎ 01:34, January 4, 2013 (UTC)
Is the "naming issue" section of this page anything other than conjecture along with describing inaccuracies in made up scientific names? If so, don't even behind the scenes sections violate T:NO RW when doing this? -- Tybort (talk page) 21:52, July 4, 2015 (UTC)
Unusually, this page has 3 images in the infobox side by side. Should these be updated so they appear within a newly-agreed upon tabbed gallery instead? — Fractal Doctor @ 13:03, 1 July 2023 (UTC)
- Just giving this a nudge. Should the images be put into an infobox gallery like others have? — Fractal Doctor @ 18:39, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- That sounds reasonable. Aquanafrahudy 📢 18:43, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
Silurian classes (and Tenth Doctor reference)[[edit source]]
It's stated in The Lost Dimension that Vastra's subspecies is the "Scholar class" while the Pertwee era Silurians are the "Warrior class".
Furthermore, on a different note, the preview chapters in Frida Kohlo and the Skull Children have the Tenth Doctor stating that humans and Silurians will one day live together in harmony but that specific future date isn't set (i.e. it's in flux). Since that's already been printed, are we allowed to put it on the article, or do we have to wait for the novel in its entirety (since the Tenth Doctor may explain a bit further)? Thefartydoctor ☎ 17:42, 15 November 2024 (UTC)
- Best to just wait until the Tenth Doctor book is out. Will only be about a week.
- The issue of the Silurian classes is one of many contradictory sources. Some sources do differentiate the Classics Silurians, and they do have different designs, meaning that it's not inaccurate. We could have different names on the tabs; it's not elegant, but sometimes we just label them "A", "B", and "C" to not be biased. TheChampionOfTime ☎ 04:34, 16 November 2024 (UTC)
