1965 was a year in which a number of events important to the production of Doctor Who and its spin-offs occurred.

January

• 1 January - "All Roads Lead to Rome" was recorded at Riverside Studios One. (INFO: "All Roads Lead to Rome")
• 4 January - Filming on The Web Planet at Ealing Studios began. (DWM 286)
• 7 January - Filming for The Web Planet continued at Ealing Studios. All the scenes of the Menoptera invasion force flying were filmed; this comepleted the filming of the invasion sequence. Also filmed was a shot of Vrestin flying from "Escape to Danger". (TCH 4)
• 8 January - "Conspiracy" was recorded at Riverside Studios One. (INFO: "Conspiracy")
• 15 January - "Inferno" was recorded at Riverside Studios. (INFO: "Inferno")
• 22 January - "The Web Planet" was recorded at Riverside Studios 1. (TCH 4)
• 23 January - The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation became the first North American broadcaster of Doctor Who when it began airing the early William Hartnell-era stories.
  • The network cancelled its broadcasts after the first 26 episodes.
• 29 January - "The Zarbi" was recorded at Riverside Studios. (INFO: "The Zarbi")

February

• 5 February - "Escape to Danger" was recorded at Riverside Studios. (INFO: "Escape to Danger")
• 12 February - "Crater of Needles" was recorded at Riverside Studios 1. (TCH 4)
• 16 February - Filming for The Crusade began at Ealing Studios. Two fight scenes involving William Russell were filmed that day: Ian fighting with a Saracen warrior from "The Lion" and Ian struggling with a Turkish bandit from "The Wheel of Fortune". Also filmed was the sequence where ants crawl up Ian's arm in "The Warlords"; William Russell refused to film the scene so production assistant Viktors Ritelis doubled for Russell. (TCH 5)

June

• 18 June - "The Meddling Monk" was recorded at BBC Television Centre Studio 3. (INFO: "The Meddling Monk")
• 22-24 June - Pre-filming for Galaxy 4 took place at Ealing Studios. (TCH 6)
• 24 June - Pre-filming for Mission to the Unknown took place at Ealing Studio. (TCH 6)
• 25 June - "A Battle of Wits" was recorded at BBC Television Centre Studio 4. (INFO: "A Battle of Wits")

July

• 2 July - "Checkmate" was recorded at BBC Television Centre Studio 4. (TCH 5)
• 9 July - "Four Hundred Dawns" was recorded at BBC Television Centre Studio 4. (TCH 6)
• 15 July - John Wiles starts shadowing Lambert on her producer duties, and begins taking more of the decisions, even before his official handover.
• 16 July - "Trap of Steel" was recorded at BBC Television Centre Studio 4. (TCH 6)
• 23 July - "Air Lock" was recorded at BBC Television Centre Studio 4. (TCH 6)
• 30 July - "The Exploding Planet" was recorded at BBC Television Centre Studio 3. (TCH 6)

August

• 6 August - "Mission to the Unknown" was recorded at BBC Television Centre Studio 4. (TCH 6)
• Middle of August - John Wiles officially takes over from Verity Lambert as producer of Doctor Who. Of course, Wiles had been shadowing Lambert for some time before today, and had already been taking most of the decisions for a few weeks.
• 30 August - Location filming for The Myth Makers continued at Frensham Little Pond. (TCH 6)

September

• 17 September - "Temple of Secrets" was recorded at Riverside Studios 1. (TCH 6)
• 24 September - "Small Prophet, Quick Return" was recorded at Riverside Studios 1. (TCH 6)

October

• 1 October - "Death of a Spy" was recorded at Riverside Studios 1. (TCH 6)
• 8 October - "Horse of Destruction" was recorded at Riverside Studios 1. (TCH 6)
• 13 October - Tristram Cary recorded the incidental music for the first six episodes of The Daleks' Master Plan in about four hours. Horn, cello, percussion, flute, oboe and vibraphone were required for the recording.
• 15 October - The budget for the 1966 financial year was set at £2,750 per episode. The figure was a 10% rise on 1965's £2,500 episodic budget.
• 22 October - "The Nightmare Begins" was recorded at BBC Television Centre 3. (TCH 6)
• 26 October - John Wiles mildly upbraided make-up lead Sonia Markham for faulty facial hair and wigs in "The Nightmare Begins".
• 27 October - Sonia Markham responded to Wiles' memo, and apologised profusely about the lack of continuity with Brian Cant's beard from scene to scene in "The Nightmare Begins". She pushed back, however, against Wiles' criticism of the wig Hartnell wore as the First Doctor, explaining that there is little which can be done about being able to see the wig line during close-ups.
• 29 October - "Day of Armageddon" was recorded at BBC Television Centre 3. (TCH 6)

November

• 5 November - "Devil's Planet" was recorded at BBC Television Centre Studio 3. (TCH 6)
• 12 November - "The Traitors" was recorded at BBC Television Centre Studio 3. (TCH 6)
• 19 November - "Counter Plot" was recorded at BBC Television Centre Studio 4. (TCH 6)
