Queen was the title of the female Head of State under a monarchical system of government, or that of the consort if the Head of State was a king.
The fact that a society was ruled by a Queen sometimes indicated that society was matriarchal in nature (though not always, as in the case of late 16th and 20th century Earth).
"Queen" was also often used to denote the key member and progenitor of insect colonies, potentially leading to confusion when dealing with sentient insectoid races. However the hierarchical nature of many of these species and their cultures effectively makes them monarchies.
Queens and their Domains
- Empress of the Racnoss - Dark Times, Racnoss Empire.
- Cleopatra VII - 1st century BC, Egypt. Romantic liaison of the Doctor's.
- Jane Grey - 16th century England
- Mary I - 16th century England
- Elizabeth I - 16th century England. Romantic liaison of the Doctor's.
- Anne - 17th century France (apparently a dead ringer for Peri Brown)
- Victoria - 19th century Britain
- Elizabeth II - 20th and 21st century Britain
- Thalira - ruler of Peladon in the middle of its time as a member of the Galactic Federation
- Xanxia - despotic ruler of Zanak
- The Queen Spider - ruler of Metebelis III, though in practice she deferred to the Great One.
- Spiders do not normally form colonies or have queens, thus the Queen Spider appears to have been a queen in the political rather than biological sense.
- Most sources agree that, at least for a while, Peri Brown was the queen of Krontep
- Katryca - leader of the Tribe of the Free on Ravolox
- Angvia - ruler of Angvia
- Elizabeth X "Liz Ten" - Starship UK
