A butler was a servant who performed various domestic duties.

Tom Chaucer was the son of the author Geoffrey Chaucer, and served as the butler of King Henry IV of England in the late 14th century. (AUDIO: The Doctor's Tale)

Nimrod was the butler at Gabriel Chase during the 1880s. (TV: Ghost Light)

After the Battle of Demon's Run, Madame Vastra and Jenny returned to the station on the Demons Run asteroid and used alien technology to resurrect Strax. They told him that the station was being evacuated, and offered to take Strax with them back to London. Refusing at first, he finally agreed to accompany them back to Victorian London.
