Hastily explaining his actions were necessary to ensure that Earth history ran its proper course, the Doctor ushered Ace back to the TARDIS, where they were fired upon with an energy weapon, a sign that a non-contemporaneous person had been manipulating the past. Given that nuclear weapons were used by both sides, hundreds of millions of people were killed in the conflict. This timeline was ultimately negated by the Seventh Doctor.
