In May, Lady Jane Grey encountered the First Doctor during a hunt in Bradgate. On that day, Jane killed a wolf inhabited by a Vrij. The Duke of Northumberland plotted to have the Doctor and his companions, Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton, executed for trespassing, but Jane saved them by pretending to recognize the Doctor as her tutor from Oxford. The Doctor then became Jane's tutor for around two months. (PROSE: The Nine-Day Queen)
Jane was married to Guildford Dudley, the Duke of Northumberland's son, as the Duke plotted to use Jane's weak claim to the throne to install his son as King of England. The wedding was attended by the Doctor, Barbara, and Ian. Jane refused to repeat her marriage vows until forced to by the Vrij, which had taken refuge inside the Duke's mind. Matilda attempted to kill Jane so she would die a martyr, but Rani stopped her and identified Matilda's dagger as the object she was looking for.
