Syria was a country in Asia on Earth.
In 1174, the Iraqi-born Kurd, Salāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb (better known as Saladin) took the throne as Sultan of Egypt and Syria. His forces fought Richard I of England over Palestine during the Third Crusade. (TV: The Crusade)
