- This was the year in which the Battle of Hastings was fought in England. It gave the Normans under William the Conqueror control of England, which had previously been ruled by Harold Godwinson. The Monk tried to change the outcome so the Saxons were victorious. He tried to thwart a Viking invasion in the north. He was stopped by the First Doctor, Steven Taylor and Vicki Pallister. - At the conclusion of the battle, according to one account, Harold's body was intentionally misidentified by Countess Gytha and Lady Edith Swan-Neck.
