The Saxons were a human ethnic group who settled in 5th century England, becoming the Anglo-Saxons. They lived in villages ruled by village elders and village councils, which were in turn ruled by kings. Saxons considered monasteries to be places of healing.

On 22 January 871, a battle was fought between King Æthelred I's Saxon army and a group of Vikings in Hampshire, ending in Æthelred's defeat. In 1066, after defeating a Viking raid, the Saxons fought William the Conqueror in the Battle of Hastings and were defeated. The Monk attempted to alter the outcome of this battle, but was stopped when a group of Saxons ran him out of his monastery.
