Checkmate is the fifth audio play in the Kaldor City series, written by Alan Stevens. It deals with Uvanov and Iago's struggle to contain the threat of the killer robots.

Kaldor City - Checkmate uses characters and concepts from Chris Boucher's Doctor Who novel Corpse Marker to tell an apocalyptic tale of subterfuge and revelation.

Notes
- Following the release of this play, and the sad death of Russell Hunter, it was generally assumed that the Kaldor City audio stories had reached a natural end. However, to date, three further audio productions have been released.
- Due to the ambiguous ending to this story, it can be speculated that what happens on Kaldor from this point onwards, (particularly AUDIO: The Prisoner and AUDIO: Storm Mine) is a product of Iago's dying brain. Another explanation is that everything onwards including the climax of this story is taking place within the Fendhal gestalt. (See story notes and continuity sections in AUDIO: Storm Mine for additional reasons as to why this might be so.)
- A specially recorded audio trailer was released to promote this story that took the form of a short monologue as read in character by Paul Darrow as Iago.
- The copyright notice printed on the CD release of this production states: "Unauthorised copying, hiring, renting, public performance and broadcasting is strictly prohibited or Cotton will insert a lemon."
- Peter Halliday (Derhaven) previously played Packer in TV: The Invasion, Pletrac in TV: Carnival of Monsters, a 16th century soldier in TV: City of Death and the Vicar in TV: Remembrance of the Daleks. He also supplied voices for the Silurians in TV: Doctor Who and the Silurians and the Alien Ambassador's species in TV: The Ambassadors of Death.
Continuity
- Several story elements were foreshadowed in previous stories; including the existence of Taren Capel's skull (AUDIO: Death's Head (audio story)Death's Head), and the emergence of the Fendahl (AUDIO: Taren Capel).
- The Fendahl once survived being dropped in the heart of a supernova. It has grown stronger from this. (TV: Image of the Fendahl
- At the close of the play, Iago is shot and apparently dying when the Fendahl (through Iago's paramour Justina) offers him a deal. This seems to involve him going back in time and killing his lover, although this may all have been an illusion created by the Fendahl for its own ends. He is seemingly taken back into the events as previously featured in AUDIO: Death's Head (audio story)Death's Head.
- The conclusion of PROSE: Corpse Marker, in which Uvanov was elected 'Firstmaster Chairholder', occurred "three years and thirty days" ago.
- It's been ten months since Iago arrived in Kaldor City, an event which occurred at the start of AUDIO: Occam's Razor.
