Events
In May, Lady Jane Grey encountered the First Doctor during a hunt in Bradgate. On that day, Jane killed a wolf inhabited by a Vrij. The Duke of Northumberland plotted to have the Doctor and his companions, Barbara Wright and Ian Chesterton, executed for trespassing, but Jane saved them by pretending to recognize the Doctor as her tutor from Oxford. Jane was married to Guildford Dudley, the Duke of Northumberland's son, as the Duke plotted to use Jane's weak claim to the throne to install his son as King of England. The wedding was attended by the Doctor, Barbara, and Ian. Jane refused to repeat her marriage vows until forced to by the Vrij, which had taken refuge inside the Duke's mind. On 10 July, (PROSE: The Nine-Day Queen, TV: Lost in Time) Jane became queen at the age of sixteen. The Doctor, Barbara, and Ian were present at her coronation. Afterwards, the Duke attempted to use the power of the Vrij to gather an army at Kentish Town to support Jane, but the Doctor banished the creature, causing the Duke to flee. On 19 July, the final day of Jane's reign, Rani Chandra arrived from the 21st century, having been sent by the Shopkeeper in search of a piece of chronosteel. She was mistaken by Ellen as Jane's new lady-in-waiting. Presented to Jane, Rani quickly became friends with her. That day, Mary Tudor officially claimed the throne, proclaiming Jane a traitor. Matilda attempted to kill Jane so she would die a martyr, but Rani stopped her and identified Matilda's dagger as the object she was looking for.
